Q: Mitral Valve Prolapse And Marijuana?

Hey guys,

i was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse a few weeks ago after having heart palpitations and some chest pain. I told them i've had the chest pain/discomfort off and on for about a year, but nothing serious. They just said it was most likely hereditary and I should be ok.

My question is this. My first year of college, I smoked quite a bit of marijuana. I started smoking every now and then, then I smoked more often during the summer. After a while, I got tired of it and stopped. I did it once in a while and as of now, I haven't done it in about two months. I was just wondering if the marijuana could have caused the prolapse, and if smoking marijuana now would effect it.

I know marijuana isn't the best thing for your major organs and I know you're healthier when you don't use it. I'm just wondering if I were to ever smoke again, what would the effect be?

Thanks,
collegeguy85

I Wouldn't Think So...
I'm not a doctor...But I wouldn't think its the cause of your prolapse. More genetic.

Marijuana verses heart problems.
My mother has smoked marijuana sense she was a teenager. Probably smoked while I was in the womb, totally denies it. My school grades tell me otherwise. For the last 4 years she has had all sort's of health issues from chronic tiredness, heart palpitations, headaches, dizziness, panic attacks, depression ect. She has always been slightly overweight but she likes to exercise, especially canoe. But she would get sick when she exercised and than be out of breath. The doctors passed it off as severe depression that is genetic in the family, go figure. They gave her antidepressant medication. Finally after several severe attacks, she became brave and "ORDERD the doctor, to do an echocardiogram and an electrocardiogram of her heart.
After the test, the doctor would not let her leave the hospital and immediately made an appointment for open heart surgery the next day. She had a stint put in and is way better now. She hike's and just completed a 142 mile La Routa Miya river challenge canoe race. So if it were me, I would go in and demand not ask, to have a better heart test performed, other than a doctors uncaring ear and a cold stethoscope.
