Q: Can Infection Spread from one Nostril to the Other?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 22nd, 2006
Last year the inside of my right nostril became very sore and dry. Eventually it became infected and crusted. I went to a doctor who prescribed me antibiotics and neosporin. This seemed to clear up the problem within two weeks. About 1 month later, I developed the same problem in my other nostril. I have tried to put neosporin around the sore area but it usually only temporarily clears up the problem. Sometimes it bleeds and smells foul. Is it possible that that infection from the other nostril spread to the left nostril? Or could this possibly be a completely different problem. The problem has been occuring on and off for about 5 months.

It is possible that you have an infection in your nose that causes feelings of sore, dryness in the nostril. It is also possible for an infection to spread from one nostril to another; both nostrils are connected through the nasal pharynx. You can visit an ENT-specialist for another examination and to request a nose/pharyngeal smear for microbiological analyses.
