Q: First Cold Sore Ever

I am 23 and have never had a cold sore in my life until yesterday. My sister has had them her whole life so I know how annoying and embarrassing they can be. Not only had I never had a cold sore before, but I currently have 3 monsters on my lip for my first cold sore experience. Is it possible that I might have had this virus for some time before it showed it's ugly side? Or is it more likely that I recently contracted it? I've read that it can take years for a cold sore to show up from the herpes virus. Also, what the heck can I do to speed the process and/or make myself look less like a freak? It's so embarrassing going to class and work with 3 ugly sores on my lip. I would love any ideas/suggestions/comments.
Thanks!

I Forgot..
One last thing, two days ago I got violently ill from food poisoning and had a fever and laid in bed all day. Is it possible that the illness may have caused a cold sore to appear. Perhaps due to my weakened immune system? Again, any suggestions, ideas etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

both are possible.

I get them every time I have a cold, everytime I get a fever. Usually 2 times a year. My friends dr told her years ago they can be from fever, and or from having too much 'backed up' in your bowels. It makes your body hotter. I have had them since I was 7 years old, and I had never kissed a boy, let alone had any kind of encounter from a boy. I am the only child in my family who got them, and still to this day--
my kids have never even got any from me.

Pple say they are contagous when you have them. If it is the herpes symplex. If it is herpes, the weakened immune system is correct. That is when they come on.

Thanks for the response. I went to the doctor and found out it was indeed cold sores. She said it was very possible that they were triggered by my illness the other day. I'm taking an antiviral med and they are slowly going away. They sure are fun aren't they???
