Q: Should I Have Surgery to Ease my Back Pain? What is Spondyl
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 18th, 2006
1998 I had a fusion of L4-5 and L5-S1. The discs were removed because the vertibrae was fractured. The bone plugs are fractured and I am told my back never healed. In July 2005 I fell and was diagnosed with a burst fract. at T-12 and comp. fract. at T-11, this did not heal. I have Degenerative Disc Dis. with bulging discs at L2-3 and L3-4. Two weeks ago I had a bone scan and density tests that revealed I also have osteoporosis. My dr. stated that with only 1 good disc I would require an 8 level fusion. He said he would do a Kyphoplasty for the burst/comp.fracture, but it may not work. For the 8 level fusion he said it would require 2 surgeries, one to remove the discs and approx. 1 wk. later a second surgery to put in the hardware. I am 51 yrs. old. No one can give me an answer (or reasons) as to why my spine will not heal. 1. What would be some reasons as to why my spine would not heal? (The dr. through the bone scan has ruled out cancer.) 2. If I decided to wait on this surgery, could the spine get so much worse that nothing could be done for me? 3. Since I have not healed from any of the other surgeries what are the chances that this one would also fail? And if it fails what then what cam be done next, if anything?

Your surgeon told you that your spine probably wouldn’t heal because spondylosis is a chronic degenerative disease that can’t be cured completely. The only difference between cancer and such chronic degenerative diseases is that you won’t die from spondylosis. This surgery might not help you very much but it doesn't seem that it will make the present conditions worse. You can consult your surgeon and perhaps a physical therapist to identify options other than surgery.
