Q: Uti Or Kidney Infection?

I'm posting here because i'm starting to wonder if my Dr. Knows what he's talking about.

I got a uti from a hospital catheter (was discharged dec. 22. My symptoms weren't that bad, so I didn't even realize I had a uti. Didn't go to Dr. 'til jan. 16-got diagnosed from urine culture 3 days later) anyway, I tried cipro-it didn't knock out the infection. Lately i've had a lot of pain, but my Dr. Says, can't be a kidney infection because I don't have a fever, nausea or vomiting. Well, if it's still just a uti, it sure is a painful one!

I am going to try macrobid now-however, if it's a kidney infection, that may not work. Should I take my dr's word on this? I have had this infection for 2 mos. And am starting to worry.

It is possible that it's moved from the urinary tract into the bladder. That is certainly more painful. And it's also possible that it made its way to the kidneys. How long are you supposed to take the second antibiotic for?
I've had many utis/bladder infections and a lot of times i'm on antibiotics for 2 weeks and the infection is still there. It all just depends on how much bacteria needs to be killed off.
If you think your doctor may be wrong, i'd go ahead and get a second opinion.

The prescription for the 2nd antibiotic, macrobid, is for 7 days. I wonder if I need a longer prescription, since the infection has been present for almost 2 months now.

Did you get an antibiotic susceptibility test with your utis so you would know the proper treatment? What bacteria did you have?

Sounds like you have had some utis that were difficult to treat.
