Q: Predicting Ovulation with an Irregular Period
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 15th, 2006
My last period was on January 21st and it ended on January 26. I had sex on the 31st. Around 5 days after my period. Im IRREGULAR. I sometimes dont get my period until 3 months. And we didnt use protection because we both really want our baby. Ive been having some pregnancy symptoms like cravings, nausea, implantation bleeding (i had a stain that looked pinkish and thats what i get before my period comes. i got surprised. i thought my period was going to come again!!), fatigue, and tender (sensitive) brest (they hurt more than usual. i cant even touch them!!), and ive had period-like cramps. But its bearly been 2 weeks. I dont know if i might be pregnant considering that im irregular. Could i be pregnant? If so, when is the best time to take a pregnancy test? I cant wait until my "missed period" since i am irregular and my period dosent come every month. Oh, and i dont really know my height!!

Because you have irregular cycles, you can take a pregnancy test whenever you want. The symptoms and signs you’ve mentioned mean very little. Only a pregnancy test can tell confirm a pregnancy. A pregnancy test is valid only after the first 10 days of a possible conception. Conception occurs soon after ovulation and ovulation happens 14 days before an expected menstruation. Irregular cycles/periodscreate an environment in which it is nearly impossible to predict ovulation using the calendar method. You can, however, use the method of measuring basal temperature every morning. As ovulation occurs, the body temperature increases a little. It is during this time that you should have sexual intercourse if you want to conceive. A woman with irregular cycles who wishes to become pregnant must first determine whether she is ovulating or not! You can take this first step and go to your gynecologist to find out!
