Q: Lowering Uric Acid Level

Hi I had a case of gout due to high uric acid level and was prescibed alloprinol on dec 20th 2005 well I have been taking it up till this day and have not had any gout attacks since well my question is do I take this forever or when do I stop taken this med I ask my doc but he beats around the bush and what not so anyhelp would be great thanks...

The target of uric acid lowering therapy is to keep the blood ua level down to 5.5~6 mg/dl. So, if you can keep your ua at that level without allopurinol, you don't have to take it. Otherwise, you have to take it forever. Check with your doctor before stop taking allopurinol. Good luck.
