Q: Fluid Retention: Mononucleosis or Hernia?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 12th, 2006
Hi,

I was diagnosed with mono in the beginning of November and still feel a little bit tired intermittently. First of all, does stress make mono linger???

Also, since I have had mono, My abdomen(belly-button area) is swollen or inflammed. It looks like I am a three or four months pregnant. Before mono, I have always had a flat stomach. My gynocologist said it may be fluid retention from mono. Could it be? It is definately NOT fat. My regular doctor said it may be a hernia. I have no pain and my bowel movements are perfect. I have no unusual amounts of gas. My periods are perfect. I have no abnormal discharge. But I did have some tenderness in the belly button area a few months ago. I have done so much research on the internet and found nothing. Have you ever heard of anything like this before??? I really need your help.

Thank you,
Jennifer

Mononucleosis Answer A446
It doesn't seem that a swollen abdomen near the navel is related to the Infective illness, mononucleosis, or, “mono”. Further, I have never heard of fluid retention due to mononucleosis. Your gynecologist can better explain possible reasons for fluid retention. Fluid retention could be caused by a hernia. In the case of hernia, abdominal swelling can retract spontaneously and then return again. You will need an ultrasound examination of the abdomen and a physical examination administered by a surgeon to exclude the possibility of hernia.
