Q: Is Kidney/Gallbladder Cancer Returning?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 12th, 2006
I have been having severe pain in my right side radiating to my back where my kidney use to be and I have had blood test, xrays and a CT Scan done. Nothing seems to show an abnormalties. My question to you is, Is it possible for cancer to return where my kidney was removed. I had my kidney removed in October of 1992, it was malignant starting off at the size of a 25 cent peice and 14 days later it was gone completely through my kidney and lymphnodes. I am worried of this happening and would also like to know if your gallbladder can regrow because I heard that it can. Please help me in any way you can.

Cancers Answer A452
The stadium of any cancer is important for its treatment and prognosis. There is a general conclusion that if the cancer doesn’t show up again in 5 years after removal it could be considered cured. In your case, it doesn't sound as if the cancer showed up again 13 years after its removal. The gallbladder can’t regenerate but some bigger intrahepatal gall ducts can extend themselves to compensate for the lack of the gallbladder tissue. The pain you‘ve experienced could be caused by gall-stones placed in the choledoccus. You can request an abdominal ultrasound to confirm or rule out this possibility. An ERCP is another diagnostic procedure that will help exclude stomach, hepatic, billiary or pancreatic disorders as possible causes for your discomfort.
