Must Read
Chronic pain affects more than 70 million Americans. But what is pain? And how can pain management help relieve different types of pain? Basic facts here....
How does the nervous system work to register pain? And what are the major causes of acute and chronic pain? Plus, who's at risk of pain here....
Acute and chronic pain manifest different symptoms. Learn the difference here and know when to seek medical help for pain....
I am trying to figure out if I may have a disorder with my gall bladder. I am going to the doctor soon. The symptoms started a couple of years ago and i've had many tests to include a ct scan, endoscopy, and tests for the liver. They could never in the past figure anything out and told me it was probably pleurisy or a reaction to the humidity in the summer. Most recently this pressure I feel in my ribs has gotten worse. The pain goes away if I drink alcohol and every morning about the same time I have yellow stools which started about a month ago. I've also had night sweats to where I will wake up drenched in sweat. This whole thing scares me to death. The pain and pressure I have in the area below my ribs is a dull pain, not anything that keeps me from working. Please reply if you have had any of these same symptoms. Thanks..

Hi There.
I too, had dull pain under my ribs and my doctor diagnosed it as ibs. Research it online to see if it matches your symptoms if all the other tests come back normal.

Left Side Pain
I too have pain on my left side under my ribcage. I just had my gallbladder out a few weeks ago (also had right-side pain and failed hida scan) and the left side pain is still here. It also radiates to my back. I have had catscans, ultrasound, endoscopy, barium xray and they cant find anything. Some days it is better than others, soo annoying and worriesome. Dont know what to do next, colonoscopy maybe...Need to call Dr.

Belching and pain under ribs
I can't believe I am about to share this but anyone having any symptoms that they can not get relief for or if the Doctor can't figure it out... You must consider parasites!!! Yes PARASITES!!

Here are just a few of the symptoms that can come from parasites -
The types of complaints I receive from people who have parasites vary. They run the gamut from allergic symptoms, skin conditions, blood problems, all types bowel problems, and even behavioral problems. The most common complaints of parasite infections are:

dark circles under or around the eyes
itching
abnormal weight (over or underweight)
a deep cough (with children, especially at night)
excess mucus production (upper respiratory)
anal (rectal) itching,
skin lesions (especially those that come and go)
lack of energy
anemia
inability to concentrate
hyperactivity (usually in children, but occasionally with adults)
chronically ill ( people who are always sick from one or another)
picking your nose (itching)
pain around naval area

The treatment for parasites has been a part of just about everyone's culture no matter where they live on the planet. But we have strayed away from taking a parasite cleanse on a regular cyclical basis because of our heavy reliance on western medicine and concepts which all but ignore the possibility of parasitic infections in people who live in an industrialized society. For some reason, we believe that if you live in the modern world, you do not get parasites unless you travel to places we generally refer to as the Third World (underdeveloped countries). This, of course, is total nonsense given the fact that parasites do not have geographical boundaries and they are transmitted most commonly in both water and food. Parasites are in all types of foods, plants, and are regularly transmitted via contact with animals. Many of my patients who are vegetarians believe they will not get parasites because they do not eat meat. However, there are many, many parasites that contaminate green leafy vegetables and other plant foods. In addition, many of the most commonly transmitted parasites are water born.

You can not treat parasites with standard anti-biotics you must see an alternative health care practitioner that only uses all natural herbs to treat it!!

Hey Van---if You Have Pain Under Ribs You May Have Ibs
Hi there. I was having nagging pain/pressure under my left rib. Had the same tests as you (everything came back normal) research ibs on the internet and see if it may connect. Ibs doesn't necessarily define bowels as in ibs but the entire digestive system (including the colon/people with ibs have what is called a "sensitive" colon that spasms--which could explain the pressure under the rib as well as the pressure one feels after one eats. Unless your 40 years of age or older/have a family history of colon/colorectal cancer--they usually don't screen anyone for a colonoscopy--under 40 years unless the first two apply (over 40)/family history of colon cancer.

I was diagnosed with ibs after having many tests done (all were normal too). I don't have so called "bowel problems" associated with ibs--but I do have pain in my abdomen and pressure under the ribcage (primarily under the left rib cage)--my main symptoms--and sometimes the pain is more noticable after I eat.

Hello lm1968 I had very server bloating and belching which caused a hernia, I was extremely fatigued and started to put on weight. I thought none of this was related, I just though my life was stressful, single mum with two children, trying to find a job, etc...The doctors put me through all kinds of tests but could not find an answer, in the end I went to an acupuncturist who also didn't help, but who suggested that maybe I had a fructose mal-absorption issue. I gave up fruit and got marginally better, then I researched it on line and found that although my diet was considered healthy everything I was eating was full of fructose, honey, mangoes, tofu, lentils, brown rice, apples, carrots broccilli,... I ate just parsley, lemon, spinach, sunflower seeds, cauliflour, fish (you can eat other meat if you are a meat eater) and white rice, sweet potatoes. No more honey. Sad but it was amazing, no joke, in two weeks I had lost far too much weight, but the bloating and burping had gone and I had so much energy! After one year I could eat more vegetables and some fruit. I hope this helps, I think I might have to put up a blog to put some of the foods I could eat on. Fructose is hidden in so many foods, if you watch 'sugar the bitter truth' on You Tube it might give you some idea about how fructose could be affecting you.

Pain under ribs, tired, indigestion, disjointed symptoms, lymph
I am 21 and have been having similar symptoms. I had a problem with pain under my right rib cage. The doctor thought it was my gallbladder but it wasn't. Had a ct scan, ultra sound, MRI of the abdomen and pelvis (which hurt so much for unknown reasons), multiple blood tests (including CBC), and multiple urinalysis. They ALL came back normal except for my ct scan I had enlarged lymph nodes on the bottom right quadrant of my abdomen, which I was told was normal and would heal itself ( and it did). I have been to multiple doctors including a GI specialist. I started to have indigestion problems and really bad pain on my sides that radiated towards my back. I have never really had back pain for "no reason". It got pretty bad and I got an "attack" a few weeks ago where BOTH of my sides and back started hurting. ANYTHING I ate or drank would cause this pain ( felt like kidney pain). But nope, once again, everything came back normal. I was told that I need to "relax and stop worrying". So I just tried to see what happens if I just waited. In hopes that my symptoms would be alleviated or that it would heal on its own. A few days ago I started getting pain and tenderness in my left armpit, then started on my right armpit. A day later, my lymph nodes seemed to be tender and swollen in my groin, underarms, and legs, and I felt bad. I went to the doctor and she told me she thought it was mono. I had another CBC blood test, another urinalysis and a Barr-virus blood test. Everything cam back normal and now i'm just waiting on my Barr-virus test to come back. I started getting pain in my arms, groin, and legs, and feeling even more tired and depressed. After visiting the doctor again, she called me and suggested that I get a lymph node biopsy and is also referring me to a infectious disease specialist. I have no IDEA if i'm experiencing more than one problem or if everything is related. In a way, I hope that it is just a viral thing. I am scared, but I really am thankful that someone is finally taking things seriously and trying to figure out what is going on. The point is, keep pursuing your health issues. I still don't understand why a doctor would dismiss you when they have nothing to loose and you have a lot to loose. Remember, you are paying for everything and it is not free so you have the obligation and the right to figure out what is going on; at least to the best of your abilities. If a doctor dismisses you, see another one, even a third or fourth one. Get different opinions and keep going (even if it seems too hard). God Bless everyone and I hope everyone finds good health and happiness

rib pain and swelling
computers please let me know if you find anything out. Ive had all kind of crazy symptoms going on. Started with severe rib pain only at night in isolated area, then the swelling began on my entire left side. the swelling subsided after 3wks or so but the pain moved to my posterior ribs. And like i said most of my discomfort comes with putting pressure on it or turning over in bed. I also recently had a knot come up on my neck with swelling. After about 4 wks it has started subsiding (the knot did not show up on ct neck but a few lymphnodes did, my blood work was all negative including for autoimmune disease). Im baffled and my docs are baffled and Im tired of feeling bad all the time.

Don't assume IBS. That is a diagnosis of exclusion. Other things need to be ruled out first. The yellow stools indicate that the diagnosis of pleurisy is wrong, plus your infection would have cleared up by now or gotten worse. You need to see a gastroenterologist as soon as you can.

Thyroid problems???
I've had these same symptoms, pressure on left side, night sweats, even chronic hives and lethargy. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease/Hypothyroidism. I would suggest going to an endocrinologist to be tested. Its very common and the left side pressure comes fromt the constipation associated with it along with the anatomy of the large intestine. they told me the curve under the left rib cage area coupled with this area being toward the end of the digestive system causes stool to become backed up in this area.

I have a dull ache under my left rib as well, I suffer from IBS and I have Hypothyroidism although not Hashimoto's disease. I also have an allergy to Gulten it might be worthwhile getting a coeliac blood test. I find that if I have a little bit of gluten it blocks me up for days, I bloat and the dull ache is worse than normal.

I have the pain whether moving or not. Wearing a belt - not necessarily tight usually makes it worse. Just had x-rays, blood panel, ekg, stool sample - all labs negative. Last doc told me bruised rib, but for 5 years now? I am diabetic, hypertensive, overweight. I take Nexium 20mg every day. Pain doesn't move. Bowel movement gives slight relief but no cure. Belching same. It has gone away for periods of time - usually when I lose weight. No clue other than weight loss.

Sounds like you have what I did being diabetic. Gastrologist found I was not processing food in the right amount of time they put me on medication and it helped a lot. I wad lucky after six months I was able to get off the medications. Its common for diabetics to have this problem.

Hi i have had the same symptoms as u all have with the pain under the rib cage. i had a scope done and found out i have a hianus hernia caused by acid reflux. My doctor says this is whats causing my discomfort under my rib cage but i have found that my muscles in my left chest and back area around shoulder blade r tightening up also causing me pains almost feeling like im having a heart attack. I finally got some x-rays done from my chiropracter and found out i have 2 ribs that grew too long (t3 ribs). I have problems if i try to sleep on my sides sometimes it causes me to stop breathing, always have to sleep on back with arms elevated. I haven't seen a specialist yet to c if this is what's causing my problems but i know i feel better after seeing the chiropractor.

I have the same pain too under the left rib cage....It was really noticable but I started doing liver cleanses and once the stones came out the pain got less. It's slightly there now but as I do more liver cleanses it should vanish completely. I have IBS and I seem to improve after every cleanse.

Hi!! It sounds like you probably have irritable bowel syndrome(IBS). I have never been diagnosed with this disease but have done extensive reading. It is difficult to determine and doctors often seem to misdiagnose it as gallbladder. Attacks of IBS can be horrendous with stomach pain and bloating; diarrhea can alternate with periods of constipation. I have even felt faint during severe attacks. I have only recently begun to have the pain in my ribcage of the left hand side which I now discover can also be a symptom of IBS. Eliminate all caffeine from your diet including chocolate (I know, it's hard to gave that up). I drink only peppermint tea now which is amazingly helpful. Avoid spicy foods and anything you think might be problem for your stomach. We're all different in that respect. Good luck to you!

I also have pain under my right rib cage & sometimes my left. I had an ultrasound & it showed nothing to do with this pain, I get very worried because pancreatic cancer runs in my family. I am taking nexium right now but I still feel the pain. Don't know what it can be but it scars me to death.

Now I will see what test is next. I was also told that I had celiac -then I didn't. Who knows. I was told to that I may have IBS.
