Q: Ectopic Pregnancy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 10th, 2006
Hi, I have recently discovered that I am 5 weeks pregnant. The only symptoms I have had up to now are really tender breats which is fine and I can deal with. However I have a constant ache in the lower right hand side of my abdomen which is making me quite concerned. I was treated with antibiotics for chlamydia 6 years ago but I have no idea how long I had the disease for. I am now extremely worried that because of my history and the ache I am feeling, that I may be having an ectopic pregnancy.
Could this still be a symptom of early pregnancy or should I get checked out by the doctor immediately.
Thank you for your time.

Early Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms Answer A434
How do you know that you are pregnant? Did you take a pregnancy test or did you come to the conclusion because your breasts are tender? The first sign of pregnancy is a lack of an expected period... but even this is not always a sure sign of early pregnancy. That’s why you always need to take a pregnancy test after you missed your period. If it is negative, then you are definitely not pregnant. If it is positive, you are pregnant but you will need an ultrasound examination to confirm a normal pregnancy. If the ultrasound detects an embryo in the uterus, that is normal pregnancy. If the pregnancy test is positive and there is no embryo in the uterus then you have one of these conditions: ectopic pregnancy, mola hydatidosa or chorioncarcinoma. You can take a pregnancy test and to visit your gynecologist should you need confirmation.
