Q: Disorders of the Temporal-Mandible Joint (TMJ)
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 9th, 2006
My GP advises I have dislocated my jaw, seemingly by eating a soft sandwich. It is very painfull and I am having difficulty eating or chewing. My teeth are misaligned and although I can just about make the left side close, on the right hand side my teeth cannot be made to close. The GP advises, when he felt the jaw moving that the RH side was moving out of synch with the left. This first happened 5 days ago and by lunch today I can hardly open my mouth. GP advises see a dentist and get a soft splint to be worn at night only. I dont see how a UK NHS dentist can fix a dislocated jaw. Is this TMJ? What does TMJ stand for? Who can I ask next, if the dentist cant help? Do I need an X ray for a full diagnosis?
