Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disease. It is a kind of psychosis with unknown etiology and pathogenesis. It is believed that is genetically conditioned and that there is some kind of imbalance among neurotransmitters in the brain. In bipolar disorder there are two kinds of opposite episodes: DEPRESSIVE and MANIC. Depressive episodes are treated with anti-depressants and manic episodes are treated with neuroleptics. Every patient has individual medical therapy prescribed by a psychiatrist. Psycho-therapy and social therapy are also very important. You will need expert help from a mental health profession to develop coping mechanism and strategies for support for a loved one diagnosed with the disorder.
