Q: Frequent Bladder Infections - Antibiotics Only Cure?

I'm one of those lucky individuals who is prone to frequent bladder infections, most especially after sex. I was initially told to urinate immediately after sex, and while this did help to reduce the number of uti's, I still wound up getting a couple.

Obviously, it would seem that when you get a uti, your only course of action is to go to the doctor, get a prescription for antibiotics, and move on. However, when you get bladder infections of up to 5 to 6 times a year like me, this can be an expensive and time-consuming proposition. It's difficult to take time off from work almost once or twice a month to see the doctor (again) about my frequent uti's.

My questions are these:

1. Does anybody know of a way to treat (cure) bladder infections without the use of antibiotics? I know there are over the counter medications that are aimed at reducing bladder contractions (what causes the pain)...That's the stuff that turns your urine bright orange. However, these don't eliminate the infection. Is there any other way besides constant antibiotics????

I'm kind of at the end of my rope here with these reoccuring bladder infections. I just really wish there was a simpler, less expensive way of treating these.

Is there any possibility the fda might approve an over the counter cure for bladder infections at some point? Wow I really hope they do...

how's that going for you?
Hi,

are you still suffered from the frequent infections?

Today I felt obliged to come on the internet and try and encourage some people who are having these kinds of persistent bladder symptoms / uti's, because a couple of years ago I really knew this pain.
I had about 5 UTI's in the space of a few months, .. when I got my fifth or so, and the doctor told me that my urine sample had no evidence of infection, that got me wondering - what the hell was going on? I had the constant urge to urinate, could often get burning pain, but I had no infection. Anyway, after visiting a naturopath and doing some reading, I made the following life-style changes which have almost completely eliminated my symptoms.

1: Give up soft-drink, fruit juice, or any other drink that contains sugar. (Even though Cranberry juice is recommended for UTI's, just try giving it up as well).

2: Really try and minimise all sugar intake in your diet. Don't eat any cakes, sweets, chocolate, honey, or even fruits. Eat steamed veges, BROWN RICE, fish etc.

3: Do Kegel exercises (research on the internet if you don't know what these are).

4: Walk every day. Do exercise at least once a week, but the more the better.

5: Urinate and wash yourself BEFORE and AFTER sex. Also, encourage your partner to wash himself before sex. Try showering together.

6: Research herbal teas - I don't know off the top of my head which is good for UTI'S, but herbal teas are a great replacement for sugary drinks. You can even chill the herbal teas if it's hot. My favourites are ginger tea, chamomile, green tea... etc

I did all of these things in 2006, and I still try and maintain this kind of lifestyle even now that my symptoms are much reduced.
It is a bit of a pain to make so many lifestyle changes, but you will not find the answer over the counter. If you re-balance your body naturally, it will heal itself and become stronger.

good luck!
