How to Prepare Breasts.... Posted: 02-07-06 14:48pm
Okay this is a weird topic...
How do I prepare my breasts/nipples for
nursing? I haven't taken the classes yet
as it's too soon, but I was told that I
should start preparing them now at 14
weeks. But how? I would just feel
weird asking my provider...But then again
I do ask a lot of questions
anyway....Don't want to ask a stupid
question like this one.

Naturally your body will prepare them for
you...Just keep your nipples hydrated...My
breats started to leak at like 24
weeks...I was totally shocked..But it
happens...Not to everyone..But it
happens....
I've never heard of you yourself preparing
your breasts..But maybe there is something
you can do to stimulate the
production...

Mine have been leaking since I was about
15 weeks...And now they get really dry
cause they havent been leaking as much...
Just the other day I saw a crack in one of
them. So i'll have to start keeping them
more moist. Thats the best thing I know
to do.

My nipple itself..Not the areola has a
crack in it too...I massage mine
everynight after the shower...I think its
the pores or whatevery opening and letting
milk leak. Sometimes it'll be pruney
because of the milk...Lol...It's soooo
weird!!!
This sh*t is crazy!!!

Put some honey on them at night...Massage
it into the nipples and areola.
Squeeze the breasts while doing this too.
When you take a hot shower, let the water
spray for a long time on each nipple.
This will get the circulation going nicely
and keep them moisturized. Massage
nipples with lotion containing aloe.
And don't wear any bra...Keep them loose
for better circulation..

You're being told to toughen your nipples?
I thought only 50-somethings told you
that because they don't know any better?
You're body was *designed* to breastfeed.
There is no need to "toughen" your
nipples. Attempting to do so actually
causes more harm than good because you
start out with sore nipples when they
shouldn't be. I did not prepare my
nipples for breastfeeding. I have very
sensitive nipples so it did hurt (but only
until let down, then it was fine) for the
first few months.
If you get cracked nipples, letting the
water run on them and then air dry is
good. Also, after nursing, squeeze out a
little bit of milk, rub it on them and let
them airdry (breastmilk contains natural
antibiotics, one of the reasons it's so
good for babies).
If that doesn't work, I have a buttload of
lanolin if anyone needs it. It's
soothing to the cracked nipples and
perfectly safe for baby so it doesn't need
to be wiped off. :)

thank god, it shocked the crap out of me
and I was embarassed to talk to anyone but
my mum about it and she said hers didn't
leak before we were born. It's nice to
now it shocked someone else too, I thought
I must have been the only person in the
world to not know that that was going to
happen. Whew!

Well thanks for your replies.....I was
told by a friend that I needed to prepare
my nipples for breast feeding and didn't
want to tell her that I didn't know how.
I did read on the internet how to prepare
them. I haven't been "toughing them up"
as they are too sore right now. I
can't not wear a bra because if they rub
on anything they hurt soooo bad. I am
glad to know that I don't need to toughin
them up.
There hasn't been any leakage yet...But I
can't wait until I can have the experiance
of feeding my little skoot. 26 more
weeks to go. Yay
