I know that this probably sounds like an stupid question, but what exactly is bipolar disorder?

I have read quite a few posts here and alot of the things I have read seem to match the problems that my close friend is going through.

It is a disorder in which a person can experience recurrent attacks of depression and mania or hypomania .It used to be called manic depression.
