Genetic Disposition for Allergic Reaction Posted: 02-05-06 08:01am
I have, actually, a couple of questions
regarding my 6 year old daughter.
Last weekend, I tool her into the
emergency room with a very odd looking
rash and it was diagnosed as
Henoch-Sholein Purpura. this was confirmed
the following day by her pediatrician who
sent her for blood tests and urinalysis.
she appeared to be doing well. the rash
was gone and she was no longer complaining
of pain in her ankles and wrists. then
yesterday, she was with my husband when he
noticed her forehead beginning to swell.
She had no pain and was pretty much
unaware of it but it was alarming to both
my husband and I because she had not
bumped her head, it was not discolored,
and there was no apparent bug bite. I took
her back to the er to make sure everything
was okay, but the doctor there seemed
rather perplexed that there was a lack of
other symptoms and sent her home with the
instructions to treat her withice packs
and ibuprofin to reduce the swelling
(these have done nothing to reduce the
swelling, which is from her forehead, down
the bridge of her nose and into the
corners of her eyes). My questions are: is
this something that is seen with HSP? is
there something else I should be looking
into? Also, my mother has a history of
psoriasis, lichen sclerosis and
osteoarthritis and my grandfather had
rheumatoid arthritis. I have also had
allergies. Could any of these conditions
be related to what my daughter is going
through? This is all just really
distressing. I would appreciated any
information that you can give me. Thank
you.

It seems that your daughter inherited the
disposition (atopya) for developing
allergic reactions. She will be lucky if
she manifests only the softer allergies,
those that you’ve described. She has to
avoid all substances (allergens) that may
cause allergies in her. You will learn in
time which substances they are. Any
substance can be a possible allergen for
people with an atopic constitution. Such
substances can be medicines, infective
agents, nutritive…
