Q: Lamictal Headaches

I was slowly ramped up to 300mg of lamictal and always had a dull headache. I have now been off lamictal for over a month but still have the constant dull headache. I had never had headaches before taking lamictal and my dr says she doesn't know any reason for it. Has anyone else had this problem? Did your headaches ever go away?

Lamictal Headaches
Hi,elkie:

I'm on 200 mg lamictal. I've had headaches all my life, finally diagnosed as migraines. Perhaps the headaches may be migraines? Mine are two-fold: the front of my head feels like it's being squeezed and the back feels as though I've been hit with a baseball bat.

I've been on anti-ds for awhile now and I'm not certain whether or not the lamictal has made them worse. Mine are just about every day, fortunately they're not the classic ones (nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, etc). Have you talked to your primary care physician and get a referral to a neurologist? What about your mental health professional (or whomever prescribed it)? Have you mentioned it to him/her?

You might also want to do a Google on lamictal and check for side effects (also called "contraindications", I think). Headache might be one of them.

Good luck.

Lamotrigine (lamictal) As a Mood Stabiliser....?
I seem to be having the same problems, dizzy, blurred vision, headaches.

I currently take 150mg of lamotrigine (all in the evening) in conjunction with 150mg of venlafaxine xl (all first thing in the morning) as my 'mood stabiliser.

I have always suffered from feeling nausious, and dizzy with lamotrigine, which is why, after much experimentation, my consultant and I have decided that I take it all at night (on a full stomach)
which finaly seems to be working.

it has taken me a long time to get as far as 150mg, in 25mg stages.

Question;

is it worth my efforts trying to continue with lamotrigine?

What do people find is an 'effective' dose?

Have other people experienced the same nausious side effects?

What other 'mood stabilisers' work well for you?

Lamictal Headaches
Question;

is it worth my efforts trying to continue with lamotrigine?

My answer: this is a "cost-benefit analysis" type of thing. If the benefits (is it helping) outweigh the costs (headaches/nausea) it's something to consider. There are other anti-d's out there. What does your mental-health professional say?

What do people find is an 'effective' dose?

My answer: The "effective dose" is on a case-by-case basis. I take 200 mg in the morning but that was determined by my mental-health professional over time.

Have other people experienced the same nausious side effects?

My answer: I haven't experienced nausea but that could be one of the side effects. Again, consider something else if you're sensitive to Lamictal. I was prescribed Amytryptaline (sp?) and had a bad reaction to it (involuntary body movements) and stopped after one dose. I also went into the ER for a migraine and was given Thorazine. Another bad reaction (I think I understand how epileptics feel). Never again, and I'm certain to specify that when I visit a medical professional.

What other 'mood stabilisers' work well for you?

My answer: I've been prescribed Wellbutrin and it was a Godsend. I started feeling better after the second or third dose. But that's just me. Please talk to your mental-health professional about this. There are lots of options.

Good luck.
