Q: Superficial Thrombophlebitis

I have had pain and burning in my arm after having an iv line for surgery over six weeks ago. The vein has become very lumpy and tender and more recently my whole forearm is aching. I was told that it is superficial thrombophlebitis caused by an allergic reaction to something that was put through the drip and it is permanent but another doctor told me it was blood clots and the problem will resolve itself. Its now been six and a half weeks and the vein has five lumps from my wrist to my elbow. Has anyone else experienced this and how long was your arm painful for and did they go away?

Thanks in advance

phlebitus
Hi,
I don't know if u have the same thing as me or not. I have post phlebetic syndrome, it boils down to Chronic Phlebitus. It is very painful. I stepped on a big piece of glass almost five years ago ended up with boood clots and was put on blood thinners. The blood clots went away but the pain and bumpy veins did not. The Dr that I had then said it would go away in about 2 months. 6 months later I still had it and my family physician tried one more scepialist. I now have a hemotoligist. He diagnosed me with PPD There is no cure yet. It depends on the person and the situation but there is hope . He sends my files to Universities every year of so and they are advancing in medicine. It is very frustrating at times but try to hang in there.
