Q: Hard Lump

I've had a hard lump on my gum, above the front tooth for a few years and i'm really worrying about it. It's been left for so long because I had a really bad fear of the dentist and the thought of going made me feel ill!

Anyway, i've seen the dentist recently and she thought it was an abcess, so she's started a root canal. The root canal was started a few weeks ago now and the lump doesn't seem to be going. My dentist took an x-ray and it showed a dark shadow. She doesn't know what it is, so she said she might have to refer me to the hospital to see a specialist, but she'll wait a few weeks to see if goes when she's doing the root canal.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I'm worrying myself stupid and I really don't want surgery if it comes to it. The lump is very hard and is sometimes tender when I touch it. The tooth is sometimes on edge as well, but according to the x-ray, there is nothing wrong with the tooth.

Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to make sure I got everything in. I hope you can help.

If I were you I would see a specialist as soon as possible. You already have waited a long time. Having said that the chances of it being something malignant is probably thin because it has been there for a few years without having got any worse. But see a specialist as soon as tomorrow, it will be worth the peace of mind you will get from it.
