Q: Is Early Stage DCIS Returning? Who should I Consult?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 31st, 2006
In 1993 I was diagnosed with early stage DCIS and had a mastectomy with tram flap reconstruction. I am very active, not limiting any exercise or activities due to the reconstruction. I’ve had no problems until recently. I noticed a quarter-size bruise on the bottom of the reconstructed breast. Within a few weeks there was a small lump nearby the bruised area. I have a few shooting pains and overall tenderness in the breast. I’m currently travelling and won’t be close to my doctors for a few months. What could I be experiencing? Should I get it checked out now? What type of doctor should I see?

Yes, you should get it checked out now. Looking at your medical history and the description of your ailment, you need to see a doctor immediately. A physical examination (palpation), a mammography and a fine needle aspiration biopsy must be performed to exclude recidivism of your previous breast disease. You can go to your General Practitioner and s/he will refer you to a surgeon.
