Q: Will the Removal of an Ovary Bring on Early Menopause?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 31st, 2006
Hi, I recently underwent a laperotomy. I had a dermoid cyst on my left ovary, and both were removed. My question is because I only have one ovary left will menopause start sooner for me now.

Menopause Answer A335
If the one remaining ovary is healthy, menopause won’t start sooner. A single ovary is capable of producing enough quantities of sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone) until you enter menopause naturally.
