Q: Baby Movement Concerns
asked by: shuett on January 29th, 2006

Hi everyone

i'm 19 weeks pregnant with baby number 4 (i am 35).

My concern is that this baby just isn't moving as much as the others did. I would be lucky to notice two movements a day - where as with my other 3 (they are aged 18 months, 9 and 14) I remember feeling dozens of kicks and movements a day at only 14 weeks!

Also, I had no morning sickness what so ever with this pregnancy, but I was extremely sick with the other 3.

I'm wondering - do babies with down syndrome etc. Move as much as healthy babies in the womb?

I went to the midwives clinic with my concerns so she used the doppler and we heard a healthy heartbeat. I have a scan booked for wednesday 8th february.

Anyone had similar experience who could make me feel a little more relaxed? I thought with 3 babies already i'd be an expert at this!

I think the best thing you could do is call your doc. Everything i've read or heard about movements have been a healthy amount is at the least 10 a day. I have fluctuations with my baby's movements. I am 27 weeks along and this is my first child. I do know that all pregnancies are different so maybe this baby is going to be your mellow laid back baby!! Lol...

I am unsure of the detections of downs. Has your doctor ordered any special tests due to your age? Mainly special tests like amniocentesis to detect chromosomal disorders. I am a very optimistic person and always hope for the best (especially with babies.) but in this case I think that the reality will win over all.

At your next appt. Mention the movements to your Dr. As see what is said!

Good luck!

Anterior Placenta
Next time you get an ultrasound ask them where your placenta is. I am almost 24 weeks now and because I have an anterior placenta (out front) I don't feel the baby move very much. The placenta basically acts like a pillow between you and the baby. I only feel it once or twice a day and the doctor said I will probably never feel really hard kicks. It's not that he/she isn't moving/kicking, I just can't feel it! It's very common too. Good luck!

Another thing to think about is if you are heavier than you were with your first three children. This also makes a difference (skinnier women tend to feel more movements sooner)

I also have an anterior placenta and I am 32 weeks and I dont feel movement as much. I feel more like squirming feelings and I feel it below my belly button the majority of the time. Like right above my pubic bone. So ask where your placenta is located because it does make a huge difference with what you would normally feel....Best of luck!

I am 19 weeks today and have not felt a movement yet!! I am starting to worry. I am on the heavy side 194 lbs. Before my pregnancy. Could that have something to do with it. The doctor has always been able to feel the heartbeat on the baby but it takes a while. Maybe it is my placenta. This is my first so I don't know. I guess worrying about it cannot be good. Just looking for some honest advice.

I am 10 pounds under you and I only felt my baby move at about 23 weeks. Hope that helps. I think your body weight can have something to do with it

i am was 19 weeks on monday. Yay for us. Anyway I am on the smaller side and didnt' feel any movements until last week. When you go for your ultrasound you can ask where your placenta is located. Mine is a posterior one and I have been able to feel her move a lot more in the last week. My baby isnt very active right now, I mostly feel her when I lay on my back and after I eat. But they mostly feel like little bumps like she is flipping around. Sometimes it's hard to hear her heartbeat but the dr always finds it.

Worrying is normal...You will do this the whole time....Just don't let it stress you out.

Btw when are you due??

I am sure you will. Its quite scary and frustrating. I remember last week, my sister in law who is due three weeks after me was feeling her baby move etc and I had not yet. I was quite devestated and worried.

Next day, felt my little guy move. We are having a boy.

Good luck with your ultra sound.

Hi,

i found out that my placenta was in front too, so I was told it would take me longer to feel movement. So it took me almost until I was 18 weeks to feel movement (where as my friends where around 14 weeks), and even now (22 weeks) I don't feel kicks every day and only when I am sitting down, so it could just be where your placenta grew this time around.
