Atypical Cells Found On Pap Posted: 01-29-06 18:39pm
I go to my gyn every last, last visit was
sept. And everything was fine. I went in
a few weeks ago b/c i'm pregnant and she
did a pap along with blood work.
She told my she found atypical
precancerous cells. Has anyone had this
before?!?!?! Please tell me what
happened to you, if you have.
I did lots of research about this and
found out that 70% of women get this.
These cells can show up during puberty or
first pregnancy (it's my first preg.). I
go for a coloscopy feb. 9th - I hope to
g-d that everything will come out
negative!
I know i'm supposed to be so excited to be
pregnant, which I am, but this other stuff
has taken over my mind. Any advice from
anyone?!?!?
Thank you!!!

Yes, I too have had precancerous cells
detected from a pap smear. I was also
pregnant when it was discovered. What I
had was known as carcinoma in situ or
surface cancer. It was caused from
contracting the human papilloma virus. I
had to have cryosurgery. What that is
..Well they will freeze the first couple
layers of cells off the cervix. It was
done in the doctors office and I went
home. They did this three months after my
baby was born. Now i'm not going to lie
but it was quite painful. But better to
go through with it and live to see that
little angel grow up. I had to have a pap
done every six months for two years. That
was six years ago. Now the doctor may say
that sometimes the scaring from the
surgery may case you to not get pregnant
again. That did not happen in my case. I
went on to have two more pregancies. The
first of those two I misscarried at 10
weeks, but I don't think it was because of
having cryosurgery. Now I have two little
boys and i'm just fine. Please just do
what your ob says. Let me know if you
would like to know more of the procedure.

A couple of years ago I developed stage 1
cervical cancer. I have the type of hpv
that messes with my cervical cells. They
did a surgery called the "leep procedure".
It's where they have this little
instrument with a wire loop at the end.
The loop gets hot and vibrates to seal the
cut on contact.
I don't see why the doc is going to
perform that with you being pregnant..
But i'm sure they know what they're
doing.
I have a chance of high miscarriage rate
and a harder time to become pregnant
because of the scar tissue. I'm not sure
if it's true yet since my bf and I haven't
been trying for a child yet. The most
painful part about the surgery was the
shot they gave me in my cervix to numb
everything. After that, I just felt a
little pressure and cramping, but it
wasn't horrible at all. Just a little
embarassing with 2 doctors and 5 nurses in
the room with my legs spread open lol.
Good luck and try not to worry too much.
It's good that they found things early on.

Thank you both soo much! I feel better
reading about your stories - it is quite
scary. I actually go for my first ultra
sound tomorrow (i have been trying to keep
this out of my mind, though it is hard
too).
Then this thurs., I go for a colpscopy
& a biopsy. I'll find out more after
that, if it is what you guys had (which
she thinks it is), then I think she can't
do any leep/cryosurgery until after the
baby is born.
Baby chloe, i'm so happy to hear that you
were still able to have babies!!! I hope
to g-d that everything will turn out okay
for me too!!!
I'm so happy to hear that you both are
fine now also! I promise I will write to
you as soon as I get the results from the
biopsy (it takes a week).
Thank you both sooo much for writing back
to me, it makes me feel much better!!!
(though, those surgeris do sound a bit
painful & and definitely embassing,
but you're are sooo right...It is so worth
it!) when the time comes, if it goes
there, I will definitely ask you more
details about the surgeries you guys
had.
Thank you so much again and I hope you had
great weekends!
Sincerely,
debbsie

I had atypical cells too. They said not
to worry about it but come back in a
couple of months. A lot of times that can
come up if you have an infection (which I
did when my pap smear was taken).

Sorry It Took So Long to Write Back Posted: 05-12-06 21:41pm
Okay, here's the update, the first one
came out good, unfortunately there was
some irrated cells that showed up by the
gyn seemed very confident with it.
I go for the second on june 1st, hopefully
that will show the same or less. I was
soo worried about it, but after speaking
to so many women that had it, and some
were pregnant too and had to wait like me,
but there were all okay and had the
biopsy/leep/cryosurgery after the
pregnancy (6 wks after). So hope to g-d,
I will have that same type of good news!
But I will keep you posted for the next
one!
I hope that everyone is doing well!!
All my best, debbsie

This actually happened to me twice. The
first time atypical cells were found they
told me to come back in a month or so and
get re-tested. Nothing was found. The
second time I had to get a colposcopy and
again, everything was fine. My experience
with atypical cells has been scary yes,
but never serious. For me they always
just went away on their own. Hope the
same happens for you. God bless.

My dr found those cells when I was
23.....I still have them and have already
had one leep done. This last year I have
had to go for a pap every 3mths
now i'm to 6 mths and I had to go today
for my appt. He did a cervical scrape
too.....But fun fun he had to open my
cervix cause the leep caused it to scar
over. I wouldn't wish that kind of pian
on anyone. I have to go back in 2 weeks
to talk about the results. The way I see
it is that no matter what kind of pain I
have to go through its better than dying
of cancer. I wish you luck.
