Q: HPT Results, Implantation Bleeding, and Pseudomenstruation
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 27th, 2006
i have a pretty regular period (28 day cycle). i am never late, sometimes early by 2-3 days at most...but that doesnt happen often. the first date of my last period was 12/29. today, i am just about 2 days late. early this morning i noticed light discharge that was light pink in color. i only noticed this when wiping, it has not been heavy enough to be seen on my pad or panties. unlike my usual periods, i have had absolutely no cramping. the hpt i used this afternoon came back negative. i am wondering if i could possibly be pregnant? could this be implanation bleeding? did i test too early?

The results from a HPT test are valid if the test is taken not more than 5 days before an expected period. This means that any testing made after an expected period (as you have done) is valid. Your test was negative, so you are not pregnant. There can be “ovulation bleeding” or “vaginal bleeding during expected periods in confirmed pregnant women”, but such a thing as “implantation bleeding” doesn’t exist. According to your history, I believe that you have had a kind of false menstruation (pseudomenstruation). Pseudomenstruations are typical in women who experience cycles without ovulation. They happen during the expected period-time but bleeding is not the same as in real menstruations and there is no cramping (as in your case). A hormonal active follicular cyst in an ovary can cause such menstrual irregularities. You can go to your gynecologist for ultrasound examination to rule out or confirm this possibility.
