Please Help. Scared From Depo Provera Now Need New Pill

Hello everyone im new to this forum so I
apologize if this topic has already been
posted. I’ve been with my boyfriend
for 3 years now. We have decided that
it’s time that we stop using a condom
and I go on birth control. The first year
we were together I tried depo provera. It
was horrible. I bleed for 2 months and I
only had one shot. I was also about 100
pounds and I gained about 10 pounds. I
didn’t see the point of being on birth
control if i’m just going to bleed and
won’t be able to have sex anyway. After
I went off of it my body was all messed
up. I lost the weight right away but I
noticed I had vaginal dryness and didn’t
get as wet as I used to before I started
taking depo. So anyways, I am so scared
of birth control but I need to choose one.
2 of my my close friends are on the ortho
tri lo and they love it. They haven’t
had any side effects. But I know they can
change from person to person. The
question im asking is, if depo provera
gave me the worse side effects of all,
will every birth control do this to me?
If I take the lo dose pills, do you think
i’ll go through that hell again? I’m
looking between ortho tri low and alesse.
What do you all recommend? I know you
won’t be able to answer all my questions
but i’d appreciate any help. Thanks so
much!!

Don't worry. From what i've heard, depo
has the worst side effects out of all the
birth control out there. I have never
used depo mainly because of all the horror
stories I have heard. However, I have
been on alesse for about 5 years now and I
absolutely .L.O.V.E it! I have never
experienced any side effects from it, and
it actually makes my peridos lighter and
shorter. I tried ortho-tri cyclen for
about 3 months, but it gave me horrible
cramps. That's when I switched to alesse
and I have been on it since. I haven't
gained any weight, no horrible cramps and
less bleeding! I would highly recommend
alesse, but do what the doctor thinks is
best for you. Hope this helps!

Not every birth control will do the same
thing as depo provera. Depo is a very
very high dose of progestin, this thins
out the lining of the uterus, but
sometimes it can thin it out too much and
cause excessive bleeding. This happens,
but not to all women. If you were to take
regular birth control pills the estrogen
would balance out the progestin and cause
fewer bleeding problems. Some women on
the pill spot a little, not bleed, but
actually spot a bit, most do not however.
Definately give the pill a try..

Thank you both so much for replying to me
that means a lot. I think I will go with
the alesse but I will ask my doctor when I
go on 2/9. Your reply has helped me a
lot. Depo really scared me I really hope
people stop taking it. Thank you once
again

I would still use a condom even if you're
on birth control. But that's just me.
No birth control is 100% effective, and
neither is emergency contraception. But,
if the thought of getting pregnant isn't
so bad, then I suppose that's your
decision.
As far as depo goes, I hate it!! I've
been on it (for pain management which was
pointless... Didn't work) since july and
i've bled the entire time. My doc talked
me into getting the second shot saying
that after the second dose the side
effects may go away (bleeding, etc). I
did and nope!!! I've gained some weight,
which is no biggy. Not a lot of weight,
but weight. Aside from when I was
pregnant, i've been underweight all my
life. Afew extra pounds wouldn't kill
me. But now that the hormones are
working their way out of my body (i was do
for another shot the middle of this month)
my skin is whacking out, my emotions, i'm
tired, etc. The funky bleeding hasn't
stopped yet but i'm certainly looking
forward to it!!!
Not all bc has the same affect, as the
others have said. Good luck with
whichever method you choose!

Yeah see when I went on the depo provera I
mainly went on it because I had horrible
periods that i’d have to miss work and
everything. He said you may have some
“breakthrough bleeding” so I took one
shot and it was okay for the first month,
then the second shot I bleed horribly! I
was an emotional wreck! I felt I wasn’t
a good girlfriend because I couldn’t
have sex with my boyfriend and all that.
But ofcourse he understood. But it was
such a bad experience. Now I heard that
doctors are saying to patients that you
will bleed the first couple months…they
didn’t tell me that when I went onto it.
I called the company that made it I was
so upset I wanted to sue them! Then after
I was off it my body took sooo long to go
back to normal. My hormone levels were
all messed up I had vaginal dryness, it
was embarrassing because my when me and my
boyfriend messed around i’d get so wet
and then after I really had to work at it
and use lubricant. I’ve gotten a lot
better since then but its been almost 2
years. I also have had a cyst on my ovary
but the doctor said you can’t prove it
from depo and it went away anyway. The
doctor wanted me to go on the pill while
all this was happening to get my hormone
levels back up but I was so scared I
didn’t do it. I wanted to thank you
all for sharing your stories with me. Its
helped me a lot.

It's actually quite common to bleed a lot
through the first shot. The benefit is
after the second shot you get either a
very light period.. Or in my case I only
had light spotting around the time where I
needed to get my next shot. I only went
off of it because I had bad acne with it.
I am on the ortho evra right now and I
really like it.

Yeah im on depo-provera..
Im not sure if I just gained weight
just because , or its just the shot..
Ive
never been that skinny anyways but ive
noticed
i've gained like 10 pounds and its hard to
get it off..
Ahh. But yeah.. I just had a question
like if anyone knew
it but I was wondering if im still
protected [on the shot]
if I spot..Does that mean that its not in
my system anymore if
i bleed?
Well the day before I started spotting, I
was horrible mood wise..
I was pissing my boyfriend off, I was
being such a "b"... I couldnt
even stand myself..Lol
so im kinda worried that im not protected
and i've engaged
in intercourse sense then...
So any advice?.. Comments?

Hottpinkgun0016, even if you are spotting
or bleeding you are still safe from
pregnancy on depo. The shot is effective
right away, no matter if you bleed or not.
So don't worry :o)
i have heard of many women becoming very
moody on depo - to the point where they
break up their relationship, or get off
depo. So make sure your boyfriend knows
that it's only your birth control! I
think more guys need to know about the
different methods of birth control! Haha
