Q: Back Surgery

My brother-in-law has a ruptured disk in his lower back and the doctors are talking of putting in a replacement disk. The surgery requires for them to go through the stomach. One of the disadvantages of the surgery is that he will only have a 30% chance of being able to produce more children. Does anyone know as to why this is?
