Q: What Do My Symptoms Point To?
asked by: Lynda on December 27th, 2003
New User
Im an 18 yr old female and lately (the last few months) I have had the following symptoms:

- fatigued
- muscle weakness (especially in arms)
- dizzyness when lying down or getting up from low positions
- achy joints
- sensitivity to cold

a few months ago I went to the docs coz I was getting really bad headaches every day so I had an eye test n was told I needed glasses. They don't seem to make a difference in my vision, though I didnt think there was anything wrong with it (except it's blurry in the moring) and I still get slight headaches which is unusual for me. The only history of illness in my family was multiple sclerosis (mum's sister).

I don't want to go to the docs if there is nothing wrong with me. Can anyone help?

Thank you for reading

Re: Symptoms
Thank you very much for your reply. I had my thyroid tested a few weeks ago because a friend said that's what it could be but that came back clear. The doctor also tested for diabetes, anemia and low iron at the same time and all came back good. Im scared she will think im a hypercondriac if I go back and tell her im still tired.

Re Symptoms
Sounds like it still could be thyroid. You need to find out the exact numbers from your thyroid and blood sugar tests. A lot of docs won't treat you if it's in a "normal" range, but that range may not be "normal" for your body. I went undiagnosed/untreated for years before I found this out. Tsh levels need to be around 5 or 5.5 if this # is higher, your thyroid is probably low. You may want to see an endocrine specialist. Hope this helps and good luck.

Symptoms
I would see a doctor. Although ms is not hereditary, it can and does run in families, or you could have another autoimmune illness. The first symptom that usually shows with ms is eye problems. There are eye doctors that can detect ms, you have to ask though. Good luck. I hope I am not scaring you. Wink

Thank you for your reply. Dont worry about scaring me- im doing enough of that by myself! I haven't told my doctor about my concern of ms in the fear of looking stupid.
Ive been tested for diabetes, low iron & thyroid probs which all came back clear and now im being tested for glandular fever (which I dont think it is), kidney & liver probs.
I have read a bit on optic neuritis but dont fully understand it. I recently had an eye test and was told that I needed glasses for reading (even though I wasn't having trouble reading- just headaches). I have noticed lately that my eyes seem to get too much fluid in them & they get blurry from it (ive heard that this can be from dry eyes though) and they are also very sensitive to light when im driving at night.
Also, I have noticed some of the cognitive symptoms such as slow word recall but not sure if it has anything to do with it.
Not knowing what is wrong with me is getting really frustrating. How can I get my doctor to consider that I may have ms without looking like an fool?
Sorry its so long! Confused

Re:
I am 26 and was experiencing the same symptoms as you, I went to the neurologist for headaches as well as my family doctor for the fatigue and wekaness. They both ran tests and nothing was found. Their only theory was a delayed reaction to stress. It all started about two years ago. I found that as soon as I started eating a much healthier diet and started a cardio kickboxing class it all went away. I can say that I am now headche free and don't feel tired and run down all of the time. Plus if you are always feeling weak and tired, the last thing that you can do is to start napping at any point in the day. If you give in to that it will get worse. You may not notice a difference until about two weeks into it so don't give up.

Re:
Thanx for the reply. Its good to know that there is someone else out there experiencing the same as me. I would love to say that it is my diet and exercise routines but i'm eating a lot better than I used to and I was exercising (have been doing taekwondo for 5 years) but stopped due to the fatigue. My doctor has now tested for low iron, anemia, diabetes, glandular fever and liver, kidney & thyroid probs- which have all come back clear.
I also get pain that runs through my arms at times and recently in my hands aswell. About six months ago I was experiencing tremors in my hand whilst studying though didnt think anything of it- just thought it was amusing!
Im still hoping it could be my diet but it would put my mind at ease if my doctor could test me for ms. Does this sound stupid? Confused

I'm no doctor, but I also have a heart murmur and it dosen't cause symptoms like that. And my doctor said most people usually don't even know they have one. The only thing I notice is real strange palpitations sometimes and I feel like I am going to keel over...Haha. Well...Good luck hope you get better soon. And don't worry about looking stupid...That's what doctors are there for!

Thyroid/Fatigu
I have experienced every symptom of an underactive thyroid for about 3 years now. I recently went to be tested and found out my thyroid is only off by 4 hundredths of a point. I was told that was not the problem. After gaining 20 lbs. in a month I had to find out. I'm scheduled to go back to retest. I have done some research and found out that a lot of doctors won't treat thyroid/hormone problems if they are in the so-called normal range, but I believe this is what's causing the problem. I can't afford to keep going through all of these symptoms. My hair is dry and my skin is flaking off. Not to mention I have gained 45 lbs. in the past year, even thought I exercise and try to eat right. I know there is a doctor out there somewhere that can help.
