Hello everyone,

i can't believe my bad luck, I have had 3 operations on my left tmj which resulted in the joint being removed, and now I am having problems with the right joint (pain, clicking, locking) it was originally presumed that my left tmj problems were caused by a fracture years ago which led to arthritis in the joint. Obviously this was only a contributing factor as now the same thing is happening to my right joint. A rib graft and a titanium prothesis have both failed, so that kind of surgery is not a option, I am terrified that it may result in removal of the right tmj. Does anyone know anybody living successfully without either one or both tmj. I have been referred straight away to a dental hospital, as a priority case due to my history of problems with my tmj, so I will let you know how I get on.

A very scared sammi from scotland

Hi Sammy

I went to meet my tmj surgeon on monday and he thinks he can help me trouble is hes got a 2 to 3 year waiting list. Because of the way things are with my dad at the moment I said id wait but he said that if I have any problems I could go up and see him. How many specialists have you seen? Ive seen 3 now, 1 in bradford one in liverpool and the latest one in birmingham.Perhaps you could have a second opinion like ive had. The dr in birmingham is the best in the field thats probably why his list is so long. There must be someone who can help you somewhere, I really hope so anyway. You have gone through a lot its a horrible thing to have.Have you got any appointments with your specialist? And is there one in scotland?.Looking forward to your reply, take care judy.

Hi Judy

Have your heard how marylee got on with her surgery back in early january??

I am waiting for an appointment to see a specialist regarding the right tmj, I never thought I would be here again, as my maxillofacial surgeon was adamant that it was the arthritis caused by a fracture 12 years ago that was the cause of the degeneration of the joint. But I have pain, and clicking, locking etc now in my right joint, I am so fed up you would not believe. I am scared that it may take some time to be seen and the longer it takes the more damage is being done. My gp has pulled some strings so hopefully the hospital will see me quickly. The thought of living without both tmj's is terrifying. I keep hoping they are gonna come up with some sort of replacement joint which does not involve any metal at all. I am sorry you are having to wait all this time to see somebody who can help you. From diagnosis to my first surgery was about 18 months, with a total of 4 years back and forward to the hospital. It gets very depressing at times. I would love a "quick fix solution" but that aint gonna happen, anyway enough doom and gloom.........

Take care judy and keep in touch

Sick of my face being in spasm :(

oh well the upside is I get some sleep tonight (diazepam and codeine together!!!)
