Q: Is Strained Muscle(s) around the Scapula a Serious Condition
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 23rd, 2006
The other day and I felt something pull in my back between my right shoulder blade and my spine. There is a spot there that hurts when I put my head down or lift it up when I am laying down. Also there is a little bit pain when I turn my head far to the right.

I feel like I need to stretch it but I dont want to make it worse. I iced it, heat it, and took some pain medicine.

Does it sound serious?

Thanks
keith

Although uncomfortable, the muscle pain you describe doesn’t sound serious at all. The symptoms that you describe can be caused by acute muscle inflammation.

You can ask your doctor about taking painkillers like aspirin, ketoprofen, diclofenak etc. You can also seek more information about using a balsam containing either ketoprofen or diklofenak or seek treatment with a licensed massage therapist (LMT).

To educate yourself, you can also identify the affected muscle(s) using an anatomy book or reference online...your strained muscle could be anything from the trapezius to the rhomboideus major/minor. This new information might help you in your treatment when applying a local balsam and when consulting an LMT.
