Q: Diaper Rash Can Possibly Cause Infection
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 22nd, 2006
My son is 10 months old and he has had a diaper rash for about 2 weeks now. I have tried every kind of cream there is and it just wont go away. This morning when he woke up i noticed his penis was red and a little swollen. I plan on taking him to a walk in clinic on tuesday but could you tell me if this is from the diaper rash or is something else causing him to swell up. He is not circumsised either. thank you , please help me out.

Your baby’s penis is probably inflamed due to infection. Contact dermatitis caused by diapers is an additional factor that supports infection. To begin, you can stop using synthetic diapers and start using cotton diapers. You will have to use a cream that contains both an antibiotic and corticosteroid to help clear the infection. If the infection is caused by a fungus, however, you will have to use some cream with anti-mycotics. You can bring your baby to a dermatologist to identify the infective agent.
