Arms Asleep
This is the first time I am posting a message. Hopefully somebody who has gone through this or heard of this can help me. In april 04 I had a laparascopic nissen fundoplication. Soon after that, I started feeling slight pain in my forearms. On may 04, I lifted a heavy box and that night both my arms fell asleep. The next few days, my arms were a little numb and I felt tingling in my hands and fingers. In august, I had an mri of the brain and cervical area and the doctors said that I don't have any pinched nerves. Then they thought it might be fibromyalgia but a doctor told me that it was not and that I was just experiencing pains and aches aggravated by stress. An emg was negative for carpal tunnel although I have been told they are not that accurate. I have been going to a chiropractor. At first, I felt a little better but this past week my arms have fallen asleep all night long every night (even when I sleep on my back with my arms extended). Last night, even my right leg fell asleep. During the day, I get the tingling and numbness sensation in my hands and fingers. I am really frustrated because nobody seems to know what is wrong with me. I am afraid one day I will not be able to wake my arms or legs up. Can somebody please give me any ideas on what to do or who to see? Thanks.

Claudia, go to a neurologist and get tested for ms. It can take a long time for a diagnosis, but hang in there. Ms has a lot of symtoms that mimic other diseases even fibro. An mri is not always conclusive. I went numb all the way down to my toes and to this day my hands and feet are always numb . I was even tested for carpal(which I do have). Keep asking until you get an answer. Go to as many doctors as you can, if you can. And as I said don't give up.

Dear san54,

thank you for such quick response. Supposedly I don't have ms because my doctor said it would have shown up in the brain mri. Is there a better test to diagnose ms? Is carpal tunnel what causes your numbness symptoms? Thanks.

Claudia,
I have several reasons why my hands go numb,ms, carpal tunnel, and hypothyroidism. An mri does not always pick up ms. Do you have lesions on the brain or on your spine. Ask or demand and mri and a cat scan. Or make an appointment with an neuro that specializes. You need an answer and sometimes it can take years. My name is sandy
