there is an analogy which seldom goes
wrong. If you have a “chat”
on the internet your computer is bound to
contract a virus and if you ever have a
“chat” or a
“pani-puri” at the best of
restaurants your gastrointestinal system
would be the new host for amoebiasis.
What is amoebiasis?
Amoebiasis is an infection of the small
intestine caused by a protozoan called
entamoeba histolytica. It occurs in areas
where there is a compromise on sanitation
and in developing countries. It would be
surprising to know that 10% of the
world’s population suffers from
amoebiasis at some point or the other.
How does it occur?
+ the psyche of the globe today is to
attach the cause of tragedies to terrorism
and the cause of diseases to certain
organisms carrying them to man. But here
the entamoeba histolytica the cause of
amoebiasis is spread to one another only
through man and without any involvement of
any parasite.
+ the cysts of e. Histolytica are in the
faeces and when they are contaminated in
water and food spread to the healthy
through contaminated hands and food.
+ amoebiasis like its analogue computer
virus can remain in the human body or the
large intestine without causing any
symptoms but these persons can cause the
spread the disease to others and are
called carriers.
+ entamoeba can remain in the bowel or
spread to other parts of the body like
liver, lungs and brain causing
abscesses.
Symptoms of amoebiasis:
* diarrhoea or more number of stools is
the main symptom of amoebiasis.
* patient may pass about 10-12 stools
during an acute episode.
* the urge for stool would be associated
with an urgency.
* even after passing stool there would be
a sensation that it is not evacuated
completely and may need to go again.
* mucus in the stool is common.
* even with loose stools the patient may
have to strain to pass stool.
* sometimes there could be passage of
blood on straining.
* flatulence or gas downwards is also
troublesome and in some cases foul
smelling.
* the other most common symptom is colic
or pain abdomen which is worse before
stool and is better after passing stool.
* it could be associated with a low-grade
fever too.
* whenever one eats out they have a
tendency to get into the episode of
amoebiasis as it remains latent and
whenever the immunity is down tends to
spring up causing an attack.
Investigation & diagnosis:
- a routine stool examination would reveal
the presence of entamoeba histolytica.
- in advanced cases a colonoscopy would
reveal if the bacteria have caused damage
in the form of ulcers in the small
intestine.
Prevention of amoebiasis:
one should wash their hands thoroughly
with soap and running water for atleast
ten seconds
# before preparing food
# before eating
# after going to the toilet or changing
nappies
# after using a soiled tissue or
handkerchief
proper food storage and handling:
# thoroughly cook all raw foods
# thoroughly wash all raw vegetables
before eating
# all reheated to food to be consumed
after heating upto 75 degrees c.
What can homoeopathy do?
homoeopathy can immediately
control all the symptoms of amoebiasis
like diarrhoea, urgency, mucus in the
stools and abdominal pain.
homoeopathy can also see that the
entamoeba histolytica remains only as a
commensal in the large intestine without
progressing to cause its symptoms and
prevent further complications like amoebic
liver abscesses etc.
homoeopathy for amoebiasis is as
wholesome as one would want.
