‘discretion is the better part of
valour’. If you have heard of this
statement and if you know how most of the
cases of aids have spread; through sexual
contact with a person having the disease
without protection, as simple as a condom,
we would realize how apt the saying is.
Aids are dreaded four letters in the world
today. Aids stands for acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome and is
contracted from person to person by hiv or
human immuno-deficiency virus.
December 1 happens to be the world aids
day.
What is aids?
Hiv weakens the body's immune defenses by
destroying cd4 (t-cell) lymphocytes. Cd4
lymphocytes are a group of white blood
cells that normally help guard against
attacks by bacteria, viruses and other
germs by coordinating the immune system.
When hiv destroys cd4 lymphocytes, the
body becomes vulnerable to many different
types of opportunistic infections which
invade the body because its immune
defenses are weak. Hiv infection also
increases the risk of certain cancers,
illnesses of the brain and nerves, body
wasting and death. The entire spectrum of
symptoms and illnesses that can happen
when hiv infection significantly depletes
immune defenses is called aids
how does it occur?
* hiv spreads from person to person
through various routes. As the virus is
found in the various discharges any
exchange of body fluids can spread it from
the infected person to the uninfected.
* it spreads through sexual intercourse
with an infected person and a simple usage
of a condom is enough to stop the
transfer.
* it occurs due to transfusion of infected
blood to a patient not suffering from the
same.
* it occurs if a mother breast-feeds a
child and if she is having the virus.
* it occurs due to needles used by a
person with hiv being used by an
uninfected person.
* once the virus enters into the body it
may remain dormant for sometime and later
in some individuals in about six months
starts multiplying rapidly. The body
fights these viruses and at some point of
time is so overwhelmed that the immune
system becomes submissive and fails to
counter a simple infection too.
* at this point of time any opportunistic
infection which infests the body becomes a
titanic struggle to maintain health. The
physician attending to the patient in the
right earnest.
Symptoms of aids:
+ in the early stages there are little or
no symptoms at all. A few days after the
virus enters the body there could be some
flu like illness with fever and bodyache
and some accompanying symptoms like sore
throat, rash, nausea and vomiting,
diarrhoea, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes,
headache and joint pain.
+ later as the white blood cells continue
to be destroyed there could be skin
infections which keep recurring or fail to
heal and swelling of nodes in the body
along with ulcers of the mouth which
become obstinate.
+ in the next few years there is
occurrence of low-grade fever continuing
for several days, unexplained loss of
weight, joint and muscle pains and
fatigue.
+ any old infections like tuberculosis or
psoriasis that have been under control due
to good immunity spring with a vengeance
and take their toll.
+ related infections of the lungs are the
most common whether it is pneumonia,
tuberculosis or even cancerous changes in
the lung tissue.
Investigation & diagnosis:
- elisa & western blot are two blood
tests that would confirm aids. But this
takes time to appear positive in the blood
say about six months.
- when a person is already infected and
confirmed with the above the number of
cd4tcells number is crucial to judge the
intensity of aids.
Prevention of aids:
# maintaining a monogamous relationship or
use barrier method like a condom during
sexual intercourse.
# blood products should be properly tested
before transfusion.
# pregnant mothers who are hiv positive
should take certain care prescribed to
probably prevent the infection from
spreading to the child.
What can homoeopathy do?
As of now there is no cure for aids in
homoeopathy. Undeterred work is on to
prevent the progression of the active
manifestation of the disease in the
infected. The ‘window period’
as it is called is the time between the
virus appearing in the body and the
incessant multiplication of the virus,
which has been found to be varying between
various individuals. So indirectly it
also means that in some infected the
diseases progresses gradually.
Homoeopathy is working on the same to
delay the progression of the disease so
that the body does not fall prey easily to
the minor infections thereby disturbing
the balance of metabolism and further
deterioration.
Needless to say homoeopathy has definite
remedies to act against diseases of the
lung, skin etc. Caused due to secondary
infection.

Although it is a well known fact that
there is no cure for Aids, are there any
special medicine that will slow down the
effects? Say Prostratin? Or are there any
types of medicine that works like
Microbicides?
