I have brown discharge every month for
three or four days before I start my
period. It has a bad odour that goes away
as soon as my "real" period starts. This
has been happening to me for years.
Doctors and specialists have told me that
it is just left over blood from last
months period. I have just decided to
stop worrying. I am very thin ~ I wonder
if any of you all are as well. A Gyne
told me to gain weight. What the....??
Can ones weight really have anything to do
with it?:::Pokey

I'm thin and that does not happen to me so
I don't think weight is a factor.

brown vaginal discharge Posted: 02-19-08 21:02pm
I frequently have brown discharge,
sometimes for the entire two weeks between
ovulation and my period. It usually occurs
when I am under a lot of stress. I am also
at the age where I am perimenopausal, so
it could be hormonal. I had ultrasounds a
couple of years ago, both external and
vaginal, and it was determined that
everything was normal aside from cysts on
the cervix which the doctor said is normal
during ovulation. So it is probably
nothing to be concerned about.

Re brown smelly discharge Posted: 02-28-08 21:59pm
Hi. I am too having trouble with a brown
discharge. But coming on here and seeing
other women with these problems has eased
my mind, and I have just started a new
birth control injection, so it is likely
to be that. I did read the post about the
brown smelly discharge, and can kind of
relate. For years I have had a problem
with an unpleasant odour down there. I
have gone to doctors and had numourous
tests done. I was told it was an
'imbalance' but wasn't told how to fix it.
Luckily I happenned to stumble across an
alkaline diet on the internet. Basically,
if you eat too much acidic food, it can
cause all sorts of problems, including
vaginitis, which is what I was diagnosed
with. So I have gone on this diet (yes,
it is very restrictive but worth it) and
the odour has finally gone. i don't know
if this will help you out, but I really
hope it does, or anyone else who has this
problem, as I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
It has affected my life to the point that
I have avoided getting involved in any
relationships. But, it's all sorted now

brown discharge could be a sign of an
ovarian problem--i have polycystic ovary
syndrome and always have brown discharge
at the end of my period. it is not a
healthy thing, you should really tell your
gynecologist.

That's true. But it's just as likely that
it could be old blood.
To the OP- I'd keep getting opinions until
you find something that works to get rid
of it.

curious Posted: 03-06-08 01:00am
i have the brown discharge every month
after period! its like having period
twice! quite irritating actually! it started b4 i had
sex, so it has nothing to do with sex i
guess .. after reading this blog i was
reassured that um fine.. but the thing is,
can everyone please give me an approximate
as to when this started? like two years
back or so? just curious .. coz wen mine
started, so did my mother's and my
cousin's! as in same year or so ... b4
that they didnt have that! so could this
be a global phenomena or sth?

Some points worth taking a look at :) Posted: 06-07-08 12:27pm
I have read many articles, spoken with
many physicians, and had some classes in
my undergrad that pertain to some issues
here. Hope something below helps:
1.) You indeed may have brownish-red
discharge after a period that is “left
over blood”
2.) Having this discharge in the middle of
your cycle or 10-14 days before your next
period could
possibly be due to ovulation
3.) Having this occur for a day or so may
be a sign of implantation (the possible
first sign of
pregnancy). It is important to keep in
mind that not all females experience
this.
4.) Ovarian cysts or polyps can also cause
this type of discharge. This is what I
had. It sounds
scary but an overwhelming amount of the
time they are benign (meaning non-
cancerous). A sonogram will rule this out.
In my case it went away on its’ own. An
important note here is that almost every
female has cysts during there cycle at
some point or another in their life. A
cyst
is simply a fluid filled “pocket”.
These usually detach themselves naturally
during a
normal menstrual cycle. Some females, such
as my self, have cysts that take longer to
diminish. For more information, that is
stated much better than I can do lol, go
here:
5.) Females who are extremely slender (and
when I say this I do not mean slim or fit,
but
underweight- meaning an unhealthy weight.
It can go both ways over weight or
under).
Can experience issues with their
menstrual cycle
6.) Females that are extremely fit
(meaning athletes, such as those that
train for marathons or the
Olympics, that kind of level of training)
causes extremely low percentage of body
fat that may cause a period to
cease (stop).
7.) Just as a side note your menstrual
cycle is measured from the first day of
your last regular
period, not the last.
I hope something here helps someone out
there. It is very important to get your
yearly pap smears as VARY RARLEY spotting
can be a sign of a more serious condition
such as an STD or a few cancers. Again I
may not be a doctor, but all this
information has come from credible sources
such as webMD (a government based medical
source), personal doctors, and for numbers
5-7 developmental classes I have taken as
I am a biology major. Chances are that
everyone here is experiencing normal
vaginal discharge and there is no cause
for alarm
Go to your Gyno every year, it is the best
way to make sure all is well. There are a
lot of disorders out there that have no
symptoms.

One other thing... Posted: 06-07-08 12:34pm
Most of the time, note I say MOST not all,
any discharge with odor is a sign of some
sort of infection. So, if you have
abnormal discharge that is gray or green
in color that is also accompanied with a
foul smell go to your Gyno to be safe.
Again this is not all of the time, but
more often than not.
However, if you have any "bad smells" with
this kind of "rusty" discharge I would go
to the Gyno just in case. I never had any
odor with mine, and I don't hear of that a
lot, but again I don't know.
Better to be safe than sorry.

^Same. I have PCOS also,
and back before I started managing it
well, I had brown spotting all the time.
I didn't have normal periods though, so
the spotting was just "whenever."
Now that I have the PCOS under control and
have regular periods, I only spot either 1
week after my period ends, or a day or two
before I start my next period. The reason
for the spotting a week after the pd is
over, is because I am preparing to ovulate
again. The first day of your menstral
cycle is the first day of your pd, so
depending on how long your cycle is (28
days? 30?), you'll ovulate around day
14ish (it's different for everyone).
For people who have regular periods, I
wouldn't worry too much about light mid
cycle spotting. If those periods are NOT
regular though, then the problem could
definitely be hormonal and needs to be
looked into asap.

Most times, the brown discharge is a
normal thing, but the bad smell is a sign
of an infection. You should schedule an
appointment with your doctor to make sure
everything is fine.

I have a question thats been concerning me
the last past week. I've had a brownish
like discharge for a week straight, and
the week before I was on my period. It
kinda worries me because I've had it for a
week straight. And, I dont know if this
may be part of it or anything, I was
almost two weeks late on my period. I
thought I was pregnant, took one, and I'm
not. I'm not on birth control, or
medication, but I am going in for birth
control in about two weeks. I've searched
around, and I've read that its sometimes
normal I guess to have a brownish
discharge/bleeding after your period, and
ovalation. But for a week straight?!!.
It's worrying me. So, if anyone could give
me advice or just to re-assure me, its
okay, I could really use it!.

Yeah, today I had brown discharge and was
freaking out in my mind. Every time I've
ever done research about brown discharge
it's mostly tied to pregnancy. so glad to
know I'm not the only one out there, but
my period ended on the 16th, should I be
having this discharge in this color this
long after my period has stopped?

Brown discharge could also just be old
blood finding its way out.
If your period was normal then pregnancy
is probably not the cause. Are you on any
kind of hormonal birth control?
