Q: Dental Implant With Bone Graft

The bridge i've had for 33 years is loose and cannot be repaired. I am thinking about implanting 3 teeth (2 fronts 1 neighboring). My periodontist sent me for an mri and found that the bone where my front teeth will be attached to is too narrow. He is recommending a bone graft to thicken the bone before putting in the implants. This will take 12 months minimum: do the graft, wait 6 months for the graft to take hold; do the 3 implants, wait another 6 months for the implants to take hold; and then the final capping of the implants. Phew! Has anyone done this? I would greatly appreciate if you could share some details of your experience. Thanks.

Hi Gearhead

I am a dentist and work with several periodontists and surgeons that place implants, many needing bone grafts prior, and I can tell you that although it may seem like a long and drawn out process, implants are the way to go in many instances. Long gone are the days of dentures or partials being the replacement of choice for missing teeth.
If you are still questioning the planned proceedures, try getting another periodontist's opinion...I bet it will be similar if not the same as the first. Implants are becoming more and more predictable and the "cadillac of dentistry"....Good luck to you.

I'm a dental assistant and i've seen the results of implants w/ bone grafts. Yes, it does seem like a long, drawn-out treatment...In fact, it is, but I have not yet seen anyone who has been unhappy with the results.

I agree with Rosh. I am also a dental assistant, and have done many implants and bone grafts. I think you'd be really happy with them, most people are. And the success rate of an implant is really high.
