General Q&A Answer A231
The symptoms that you describe are often present during a case of acute conjunctive inflammation, or conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis, or "pink eye", is frequently caused by a viral infection. Adenoviruses are the most common agents of a viral infection, but HSV-1 is present during cases of conjunctivitis, too.

You can go to your family doctor first and seek a diagnosis. You might also request information from your doctor about antiseptic eye-drops. Antibiotic eye-drops are given when the infecting agent is bacterium or to prevent further bacterial super-infection in case of viral conjunctivitis. Acyclovir is given for HSV-infections (locally and orally). Corticosteroids are not recommended for viral infections but they can be given in severe cases to prevent more damage and complications. Then, if necessary, your doctor can refer you to an ophthalmologist, who specializes in eye conditions.
