Q: Intestine Died

My step-dad a few years ago was taken into hospital complaining of pains all over when touched. It hurt him to move in any way even touching him as gently as you could.

When the hospital failed to diagnose what was going on specialists were called in and even they failed to diagnose anything. After about a year of being poked and prodded he eventually died.

We were eventually told that his intestine had died - what the hell is this and what could have caused it? Was the hospital at fault for not diagnosing this whatever it was?

I'm in the uk.

I know that ibd can cause that to happen. Even tho you usually dont die from it. What happens is that the inflamation/infection stops the intestine from getting oxygen and that part of the intestine dies. Operations where part of the intestine is removed is done when this happens.

I had a second surgery because the surgeon "forgot" to put back the small intestine after removing the gallbladder (it happened to slip out a bit when he removed the bladder through a small hole below my belly button).
When I came back in again, throwing up dark green bile, the new surgeon said that it was possible that the intestine was beginning to die due to being glued to the surgery wound, because it would lack blood circulation from being folded.

Luckely, it all went well and my intestine survived.

This is medical malpractice and it sounds as if that goes for your dad as well. I might add that I am in the uk as well and I am suing nhs for this mistake. It's been a nightmare and I won't let them get away with it.

My cousin has a weird form of Crohn's disease and every couple of years he has to go in for surgery because different parts of his intestines are dying. They end up having to take the dying part out and sew the remaining sides together. Could it possibly be anything like that?

MY SISTER
My sister has been in and out of the hospital since sept 5th diagnosed with diverticulitis, she has been vomiting since day one. she continued to have problems, not a week later she had to have her gall bladder removed dr said the gall bladder was irritating the pancreas which was not good. she is still vomiting and has pain on her upper abdoman. she has not eaten solid food since she went into the hospital and just yesterday she had a upper gi done with some contrast well she threw that up and could not proceed with procedure. she now looks at you with her eyes so wide open her room is always dark. she tells me sometimes she doesn't know who she is or what she is doing. she can't get blood drawn fromher arms for being so fraile and she gets fluid thru a pic. i don't know what more to do for her. it scares me, she weighed 245 lbs. she has lost 65 lbs since sept. i don't know who to look for answers medically though she has her physician and specialist but, wondering if we need to look in another direction of physicians. she told me that when she would swallow she felt when she swallows as if a flap had to open to allow what she swallowed would go through then shuts. its really beginning to bother me and my whole family and i would like some answers or direction if anyone could share with me something.

GI exam
I know thiscomes a few months after your post and I hope it finds your sister well! But I read where you say she could not proceed with the upper GI exam so I wanted to post this.

I had a sensation like she is describing and went in for an unrelated GI exam but during the exam they found that I had a tumor of the esophogus. I assume this could not be seen on xrays or sort since they now have to continue yrly exams by going in to see if anything has re grown. Hopefully she had her exam and all is well.
