Hi all -

i took antibiotics for three days due to a urinary tract infection. I know that when I take antibiotics, birth control doesn't work. What I don't know is how long I need to use protection for, and if I need to throw away the pack i'm using and start another pack.

Help please!

Ana

If it was me what I would do is continue your pills and use protection for the next month or so. Also remember that unless you are in a long term trusting relationship it is smart to use protection all the time!

Medically speakling after you finish your antibiotics you need 7 extra days of birth control for it to become effective.

What I mean is you need to take the pill for 7 days for it to be effective again. Just like when you start birth control, you need 7 days to become protected.

But 7 days starting with a new pack (white pills) or wherever I am in my pack at the time?

You re right :) you need 7 days where you left off in your pack. If the 7 days happen to include a period week, like say 3 active, and the rest palcebos, just go straight into another pack.

If you were to have otherwise unprotected sex during antibiotics and those 7 days, would it be possible to get pregnant? And would continuing the pill cause a miscarriage?

From what I have read on here, continuing the pill does not cause a miscarriage. But, if you are pregnant you need to quit taking the pill because it could harm the baby in other ways...I am really not sure, but there are posts on here about it.

Birth control does not harm a baby, but if you are on birth control it is obvious that you do not want to be pregnant, and there are options .
