what is sinusitis?




* sinuses are empty spaces in the skull near the nasal cavities.



* sometimes when there is an attack of cold the discharge tends to get collected in the sinuses causing sinusitis.




Symptoms of sinusitis:

- patients have regular colds with fluent running nose sometimes which becomes thick and yellowish typical of an infection.



- there is blockage of nose or difficulty in breathing through the nose. It could alternate between nostrils, it could be worse on lying down at night.



- patients have sneezing which could be violent and continuous immediately on waking in the morning and on exposure to dust, smoke, odours or cold.



- there could be falling of mucus from the nose into the throat causing throat irritation too.



- the other worrisome symptom is headache. Also a dull, heavy feeling in the head and the patients find it difficult to concentrate on even sundry jobs.




How is it diagnosed?




an x-ray of pns could reveal the sinusitis.



if it is due to an allergy the absolute eosinophil count is raised.
