me again
for anyone still reading and in the future viewers. i had the camera down the throat today and the found stomic alcers. they said to many to count. im happy about that cuz its only meds to made it go away. they told me if people dont get treatment for the acid that it can cause esofiguas cancer and said that the end result for it isnt good. so its so important to treat this and not live with the acid and bloating and pressure from not burping and pain to. they did say and im having now, that a side afffect that can happen is that it feels like some thing is stuck in my throat and hard to breeth sometimes and last for a few hours. they did do a biopsy of my small intestant and esofaguas to make sure there isnt something starting as in cancer but they didnt see anything with the camera. and the camera is nothing to worry about. i cant even tell they did it. thanks

Another non burper
I am 50 an have had this problem all my life. I could have written most of these entries myself! I also have IBS. I have been taking chewable acidophilus tablets with bifidus the "goodness of yogurt" in a wafer. I tried eating yogurt but I think it's gross. This stuff has really helped with the IBS. I have found nothing that helps with the blouting of not being able to burb except the gag trick. It is upsetting that Doctors do not take this problem seriously. If anyone finds an answer please post. Want to talk about it?

Wow, so im not a freak after all. I've never burped, i have terrible pain and bloating. I've tried tums, nexium, prilosec-among others. Nothings worked. I've also moved on to natural remedies such as apple cider vinegar. The dr always tells me i have gerd but from what i've learned the most common symptom with that is heartburn, i really dont suffer from heartburn often, its the bloating and chest pain that kill me!

Another nonburper
I'm a 31 year old Norwegian and also a non-burper. Had two beers and a giant burger in 20 minutes last week, and the pain forced me to do the fingers trick. Didn't really relate the chest pains, bloatedness and excessive farting to the nonburping until recently, but now I'm going to the doctors for a checkup in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know if he tells me something useful.

sore throat? Mitral valve?
A couple of things I'm wondering. Does anyone else get a sore throat from doing the gag trick? Also does anyone elase have a mitral valve prolapse? I don't really think their related but they are both malfuntioning valves within the body. Any replies?

FINALLY!!
I am 25 years old and have had all the same problems with not being able to burp my whole life and having stomach problems because of it. I have actually learned to burp. It's strange and amazing. I suspect there to be something physically similar that all of us have in common that kept it from being a natural reaction, but at least with me... over the last 4 months or so, I've gotten to the point where I can actually burp when I need to most of the time. I still can't belch on command or burp the ABCs, but when I feel the need to burp, I can do certain things with my chest, shoulders, neck, jaw, and throat to make a burp happen (sounds more complicated than it actually is once I got the hang of it). Sometimes they're small and sometimes they are big. It did not completely fix my stomache problems, but it is better and i can now better understand which foods upset my stomach, and I can explain it in no other way than to say that it is absolutely glorious. I'm interested to see if I can help anyone else learn how to do this. Feel free to contact me if you would like more information and assistance learning to burp. I hope your search turns out as well as mine did.

I am the same, some of the things said in this thread describe me exactly. But nobody takes it seriously, it's not even worth going to the doctor for.

I can't drink beer at all because of it, which is really emasculates me when going out. And I can't explain it to people, they think I'm joking or don't believe it, or think it is not a real problem, and I don't blame them.

People think I can't hold my drink because after half a pint of beer I feel really ill because of all the gas pushing on me and no way to release it. And I literally can drink or eat nothing then, because it is really hard to swallow something.

What is the gag trick and how do you do it? Is it basically making yourself vomit? Because I am a bit emetophobic as well (fear of vomiting). I have not been sick since I was a child, and even when I have been ill, I don't vomit despite needing to, I sort of stop myself as it's coming out, and just painfully retch.

I know it sounds gross, but take a swig of apple cider vinegar. It actually helps digest what is sitting in your gut. This has been more helpful (and my husband burping me like a baby) than any meds I've ever used. You can also dilute a Tablespoon of it in 8 oz of water and sip it slowly....but I prefer to get it over with and take it straight. 3 minutes later...much better.

I love everyone that answered this question! Nobody believes me that I have only burped 3 times spotaneously in my life- (I am 40). I can give you the dates because it's frightening when it happens. I can burp when I "fake" throw up. I have to bend over, make puking noises or stick something down my throat and stop the puke before it comes up but after a huge, loud, embarrassing sound comes out. It takes talent and years of practice to do it! I've never thought of talking to a Doctor about it. Should I?

back pain
Does anybody experience back pain with the gas? Sometimes the gurgles come up on their own while other times I have to beg someone in my family to massage a spot on my back that seems to release the gas/gurgles. The back pain is horrible and can last a good long time(an hour or so). Haven't seen any other posts in this thread that mention the back pain. There's got to be a genetic factor, as my dad and sister both experience the same thing.

no burp
I have always had this problem, never able to burp (except for the "frog noises" that other people have mentioned. I also have a lot more flatulence than I'm sure I should have, probably as a compensation. I had never thought to research this until now, and it is great to know that I am not alone, and now I've got to read through all these responses Razz

Alright, well I know that it may not be the same thing for everyone, but this is what I've found.

The biggest thing for me to learn was torso, shoulder, neck, head, and jaw placement to allow a burp through. I have to be at least sitting up straight or leaning forward slightly is even better. Can't do it while sitting back. I have to push my shoulders straight back, the further the better. And then I have to push my head forward and then chin down. At first it helped me to turn my head left to right while my chin was down and head out. It also helps open my throat if I open my mouth slightly and push my jaw forward, like giving myself an under bite. Regarding throat muscles and relaxation, I've found that the only thing that I was familiar with that is similar to "opening my throat" would be a yawn. So if I position myself in the way specified above, and then make myself yawn, the first part of the yawn (before it takes over and you feel like you have to yawn) is when I will burp.

It took me probably 3 months to realize that full list of motions after I started getting a little bit of control. As odd as it all sounds if I have even one of those incorrect, I usually can't burp, or the burp is miserably small and useless.

This only works for me when I need to burp. I can't burp on command, but if I've just drank half of a Mountain Dew and feel like I need to burp, I simply make sure to be sitting/standing up or leaning forward slightly, push my shoulders back, touch my chin to my chest, and then right when I feel like it should be hitting my throat, I push my head forward (while still keeping my chin down), open my mouth slightly and push my jaw out and start the yawn feeling in my throat. Once I got the hang of it, I learned that by having breathed some air into my diaphragm, I could push out a larger burp by using that air in my diaphragm to push on the burp. I didn't learn that until I got the hang of smaller burps.

I don't know if this is common with others or not, but I've got a bit of an overbite and some sinus problems. For as long as I can remember I've gotten phlegm stuck in my throat and have to spit it out... and the more stuff in my throat, the less likely I am to be able to burp as well.

Hope this is something that can be helpful. I'd like to know if it is. Keep me posted.

Bob
