I can't burp
I also have problem with being unable to burp, I get severe gas pains that make me nauseated, and the pain is everywhere. In my sternum, under my ribcage, up to my shoulders etc. The only thing that I've found helps is laying down with a heating pad on my stomach although it takes a long time sometimes a couple of hours. I still don't burp but the gas seems to move down so I can fart. This an everyday battle, I feel the best in the morning and the gas gets progressively worse throughout the day, untill after dinner I have to lay down with the heating pad. Then the cycle begins all over again the following day.

we are in this together
My name is keith, i'm 20 years old and i too am a non-burper. As far as i'm concerned there's nothing to be done but i may be able to help those with the hardcore gas cramps. I've only had a few of those cramps myself, not often, but i think i know what you are talking about. Think about the physics of your trapped gas and let it go from there, try hunching over on your knees with your ass up in the air kinda like doggystyle only your hands arent holding you up, it works for me.
As for burping i've come to the realization that its just not for me which as some of you may know can be a problem for a beer drinking college kid like myself. As a novice beer drinker in high school i would get so full of gas that i would let out this monstrous burp followed by the last two beers i drank and after that it was game on, a pretty humbling learning experience i must say. As a got older like now and the past year i learned that i cold let out that monstrous burp and not follow it up with wasted beer by trusting myself and understanding that that burp was my grace burp after i let that one go i learned i'd better not press my luck.
In conclusion, to the disillusioned beer drinkers, take advice from this young non-burping college student who is still learning about himself with every drink. Be wary of those first few beers, and practice releasing the pressure without releasing your brew. Go in the bathroom at a party or outside, somewhere secluded and let it out, besides, if you throw it up, pressure's, gone and it's back to the festivities.
I've been drinking for 5 years and holding it down for 4

I cannot burp
I too cannot burp for over 50 years. I went to see Dr. Peter Kahrilas in Chicago - who wrote about dysfunction of the burp reflex. Basically he said if you can find relief either by sticking your finger down your throat to release the air or by lying down then go ahead and do it. There is some medication that is being studied but it is not yet available.

I told him that I wished the condition known as "Dysfunction of the burp reflex" was publicized in Medical Journals so that Internist and other doctors where aware of this condition. It would certainly make patients feel better when they talk to their doctors who often say "everyone can burp" or "you have to be able to release the air".

Good luck everyone with your "gurgles". It's nice to know that I am not alone. My internist put me on Nexium - it helps a little bit with light meals but it does not release the air for soda pop or beers.

Hi all, so good to know I'm not alone, I feel all your pain and will soon find out what it is, I am on my way to the Doc's next week as I suffer the exact same symptoms that you have all described, so as soon as I find out it should help others get pointed in the right direction.

Amazing!
I can't believe there are so many people out there with the same problem! I'm 32 years old and have not been able to burp for as long as I can remember. My 9 year old son also has not burped since he was about 2 years old.

I do not vomit with the excpetion of extreme illness maybe every 3 years.
The gurgle between the chest & throat is painful.
I've tried IBS medications that didn't work.
A gastroenterologist told me to try working out more. (I'm a 5'9", 120 pound workout nut!)
GasX helps a very little and very temporarily

I would love to find a cure for this annoying & painful feeling of fullnes & bloating. If there are any doctors out there reading this.. make yourself a millionaire & listen to us and find a cure Rolling Eyes

Until then, Good Luck to all & please keep us posted on any break-throughs!

Wow. I can't believe how many replies are exactly similar. NO ONE I know has this problem. If I'm out for a couple beers with friends, I have to duck out to the bathroom once or twice throughout the nice and stick fingers down my throat to release the excess gas.

I too get the gurgles and I stopped drinking pop altogether because of this, I guess this is actually a good thing.

I suppose with all the talk of potential ulcers etc I should go get it checked out sometime, although I have had this problem all my life and have just come to accept that I make extremely loud gagging noises every weekend while out for drinks Razz. I loved reading all the other similar people and posts in this thread.

From experience: Take priolsec or another prescribed medication to reduce acid and refrain from food and beverages that creates gas, like beer and soda, white beans, etc. If you don't you will continue to have this issue.

Lifestyle change will help.

Me too!
My symptoms are the same as what everyone else has described. I'm sitting at work right now (after lunch) stomach all bloated...wishing I could burp =(
After drinking a few beers, I used to have to do the finger trick and "seal burp" as my friends used to call it! SO LOUD! Terribly embarrassing to do in public...
Are there any doctors out there who can give us a better answer?

Wow! I really never realized how widespread this is. I think the worst for me is the gurgles. It can be so loud and embarrassing, especially in intimate situations or quiet places. I did think that it could be related with my burping issue, but never truly connected it until I read this thread. I also only throw up if hideously sick, am gassy, and feel bloated easily. I hope that someone figures this out. We can't possibly all be making it up!

gurgle burps - lots of posts.. no simple cure
Had the same symptoms as long as I can remember. Just last night started the "finger down my throat" after a tooth brushing my tongue caused an incredibly loud burp like things.... like a violent burp... but instant relief. So I spent the next three hours on the road trying to repeat it with so so success... just not wanting to get more than a burp since it is so unpredictable! I just want to learn how to burp for crying out loud!

burbless
Totally understand the ridiculous noise, after drinking some hard lemonade once this happened unexpectedly and my friend's response was "satan's trying to get out of her!" which just made me laugh causing more than just noise to come out. That was fun. Anyways, I'm a 21 year old non-burper and know a 26 year old ex-non burper who says that now he can burp but it's uncontrollable. I feel like this is a problem that seems to be ignored or diagnosed interchangeable between doctors (or so it seems in these comments, e.g IBS, ulcers, and gastritis). Is there an answer out there? Has this just been un-researched?

I am the same!
The last burp I did was i thought I was going to be sick, and nothing came up only a burp. Since then i have that growning noise, and it was horrible in school Sad It used to do it in classes and everyone laughed and i even got sent out sometimes for "Messing Around" or "Distracting" others. I hate it.

Burp?
I honestly think my family consists purely of burping champions, except me!!!! I got the same s**t like everyone else here, just a little worse i think!!!

First off all I am German, and i f***in love beer (so much for the stereotype) problem is, that i not only get huge amounts of gas because of this burping thing, but also have to belch or eructacte every half minute or so (after drinking around 2 liters of beer)! Then after a while i start having hick ups so bad, that i basically get sober again after no matter how many beers i've had. Sometimes it gets even worse and they turn into double or f***in triple hick ups, meaning three hick ups at once (which hurt like someone is punching you in the throat) instead of one! The only way to stop them is to lay flat on a bench or the ground (whatever possibility you have at the moment) and breath in very calm for like 10 Minutes, or if its really bad go to bed, though there will still be a bad hick up about every half hour for the next day!
In case i do puke from alcohol, which is quite rare i do have the loudest burps before doing so!! Thats probably the only joy i found in this whole dilemma, cause I actually woke up my Aunt and our Neighbors one house further down the street, which was pretty damn funny!!
Also cause of this sh*t, i think i have the loudest farts in the world, no joke!! And those come like every half minute every day!!
I cannot believe theres so many people who have this problem, and no f***in doctor knowing anything about it!

Last but not least I just wanna say f**k all these dumbasses trying to tell people not to drink beer or fizzy drinks, stop smoking and eatin less fatty stuff, what the f**k are u gonna do all day then anyways? Even when I do have a healthy diet, I still get bloated!! I rather fart all day then stuff myself with f***in antifart pills all day!

Im not lookin for answers cause i guess there are none, just wanted to get that out of my head!

Hello non-burpers!
Same here,.. i'm 36, and as long as i can remember, i couldn't burp at all. Occasionally (1-2 times a year) something slips out during workout or bending, so I know that physiologically I could do it, but never been able to. I even know when a burp should be happening, I feel it gurgling up, rise from my stomach to the bottom of my windpipe, but then stops and slowly has to work its way down.

Fortunately I rarely have any discomfort (perhaps I don't know any better) but I've been asking my friends how to burp. What mechanism or adjustment, i need to do down there to release the gas... eventually it works its ways out of my body on the opposite end, but I'm sure I would be much more comfortable if I could release the pressure right after eating/drinking. I still haven't found a solution, but all of you and your comments made me feel much better and accept that this might last all my life. I've always had a mild heart burn after certain acidic food/drinks, but I drink milk/cocoa every day (loaded with calcium) to balance the hp (not sure if its related at all, but reading about ulcers... i thought I'll mention it)

good luck ya all,
utis

Yep, me too.
So I experience almost all of the symptoms that everyone else has mentioned.

Can't burp. Get the gurgles. Stomach gas pressure. Etc.

Generally, I'll be "gurgling" all day. Sometimes I wake up in the morning full of gas and not even hungry. I definitely feel my stomach acid back up in to my esophagus quite often, which is why I take Pepcid. It definitely helps the stomach acid, but really has no effect on the whole "can't burp" thing.

I've read on a few other sites that one may consider getting an upper GI Series or Upper Endoscopy to see what's going on in there. Frankly, I don't think that anyone knows what the hell we all have or what to do about it.

I've heard of a few successful surgeries here and there, but I imagine they're all unique to the individual.

Ugh. I hate this!

Temporary Fix
Alright so something that I've found to be EXTREMELY helpful in getting rid of the gas pressure is Mylanta.

It's similar to Tums but very effective. Take 2 before you have a meal or if you just start to feel the gas pressures building. It works within minutes.

BEWARE of Acid Reflux and "non burping"
Hi there, Im another one. lol. Never burped as far as I am aware. I am 43 year female.
I wanted to make a comment to warn people who have acid reflux/heartburn. I used over the counter ant-acids for years and years for the acid and the "frog gurgling". I didnt seek professional advise (thinking it was just me !!) until 3 years ago. The acid and gurgling has now damaged mu osophagus and I have not developed a condition called Barretts Disease. This is a pre-cancerous condition which at present cannot be reversed. If you have these gurgles and reflux PLEASE get it checked. If your doctor fobs you off KEEP BUGGING HIM til he does something about it. Ok, its not nice having cameras shoved down your throat, but if you get things fixed sooner rather than later you might avoid being in my situation.
x
