me too!
I have had this problem for like as long as I can remember. It comes and goes. It's like a gurgling in my throat and its so embarrasing. But it usually only happens when i am nervous or sick or like thinking about it (ok so it happens a lot). And from what i can remember i've only burped like once in my life. I was telling my mom about it and she said my grandmother has the same problem. Unlike a lot of you though i do not stick my fingers down my throat because i gag too easily and will throw up but do you know of any way to get it to stop. I'm just glad to see i'm not the only one with this problem since all my friends are always making fun of me....and i heard that it could be from eating to fast but i don't know if thats true.

me three!
You mean i'm not the only one on the planet who can't burp...? The looks of disbelief I get when I tell people this... I have gurgly noises where I guess a tiny bit of air escapes, and do little hiccupy noises to get air out, but that's it. Never burped since I can remember. (I'm 19 f.) I suffer chronic abdominal pain but no other symptoms, and have done since I was like 10; no idea why; my stomach doesn't become bloated and the pain isn't really gassy so it could be an unrelated problem (albeit one I haven't found the cause to yet!). I've been meaning to tell my doctor about my non-burping, but feel so embarrassed because it sounds so stupid...

So has anyone at allllll with this problem had a doctor suggest reasons for this and/or had any form of treatment? I cannot find ANY research articles etc that refer to people unable to burp, except those who have undergone a procedure (laparoscopic fundoplication) to treat GERD/acid reflux/heartburn (none of which I've ever experienced, what about you guys??) - a common result of the procedure seems to be an inability to burp; so maybe us non-burpers have like the opposite of GERD etc, and our oesophagus/fundus is arranged like it is artificially via laparoscopic fundoplication. Either way, somebody do a damn experiment or at least give this condition a name - we need recognition!!!!!! lol

WOW
Like many others, I can't believe I have found others with the same problem! I also suffer from Peutz-jeghers disease (Polyps in the intestines and stomach) which in itself causes horrible frquent stomach pain. In addition I have also suffered from major bloating and gas. I try to explain to people how hard it is to lead a normal life but they don't get it. I never remember being able to burp and I too have suffered from the odd throat noises and gurggleing. I would appreciate any info anyone has come across.

I wish there were something , until then i guess i will keep gaging. It is really nice to talk to others with this condition .

Amazing! I never came across anyone who has the same problem in real life. Most posts here have pretty accurate descriptions of my problem.

I've had the gurgling throat problem ever since I was like 12. Except for some minor shame it hasn't been that much of a problem. But the last 6 years (I'm 29 now) I have acid reflux and a very bloated feeling all the time. This causes me to feel nauseated a lot after meals. I can't burp to relieve the gas, I mean I can't initiate it myself. I've had a bunch of tests done and they've put me on 2x20 mg of Omeprazole every day. This helps a lot with the acid reflux but does nothing for the bloated feeling. I must say, I used to never burp, sometimes a small burp would come out but this was like... three times a year. Ever since I started the Omeprazole, I burp daily but not enough to relieve the tension. They are very small burps and hardly any gas escapes. I'd just pay good money to be able to let out a good long burp.
I'm no doctor but having the condition for several years now, I think this is what happens : The gas can't really escape my stomach which causes my esophagus to open up a bit (balloon effect) which in turn lets out some stomach acid in the esophagus and causes the reflux. If I could just find a way to release the built up gas, I'm sure it would help a lot.
I can't do the fingers in throat trick because I have a fear of vomiting and I gag very easily.

I'm also one of those persons who base their life around their meals. I almost never eat before meetings and if I do, it's a very small meal, like half a sandwich to get rid of the hunger. I don't really care about the embarrassing throat gurgling sounds, I just care about the fact that they make me feel bad, nauseous . I can't drink more than two beers before feeling nauseas and bloated which is a serious social handicap. Speaking of which, I can't eat appetizers either or a soup before dinner/lunch because if I do that, I can't eat the main course anymore. I can't eat desert either because 15 minutes after a meal, I start feeling bloated/nauseated. It makes for some really embarrassing situations when I'm invited for a meal somewhere or even a night out partying.
What I found that does help a bit is eating antacids (Maalox) like candy. If I eat one or two after a meal, the feeling of the food not digesting in my stomach subsides. Doesn't work all the time though, especially not with beer.
I can't believe this many people have the exact same problem and I can't believe the medical community doesn't look into this. When I told my doctor about the gurgling sounds, he kinda looked at me like I was a hypochondriac, making up symptoms. When I told the stomach specialists at the hospital, they dismissed it right away. Well they didn't really dismiss it, that's giving them too much credit. They just ignored it when I told them.
This must be kind of a "disease" right if this many people have the same symptoms. Especially when most of us didn't even know there were other people out there that have the same thing so we couldn't read/heard about the symptoms.

It's really crippling my social life and I would give almost anything to find a cure that actually works. So please if someone out there knows how to solve it, let me know!!!!!!!!!

(btw I also have the jaw problems that some describe here but I can only think that this is not really related, maybe only to the fact that these problems can also be caused by stress like a high level of acid in the stomach)

add me to the list
I have never found anyone else with this problem. I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I am 28 and have had this since I was about 16.
I have had a few open heart surgeries, and have an underbite and breathe through my mouth because of it. Does anyone else breathe through their mouth instead of their nose? Has anyone else had a heart surgery or any other surgery where their chest has been cut open? I always wondered if these issues had anything to do with the fact that I can't burp. Please let me know if anyone finds any answers.

Re: Weird Bump under rib cage....
slm88 wrote:
I know this is a random question, but for some reason I feel like this might be something that could be really hidden and relevant. When you lye down, and feel from the middle of your rib cage, following along the bottom of it, about two finger widths to the right, this sort of bump that you can move and push in and out, and if you do it a few times, it relieves something in your stomach, that helps you to breath the right way again......

yep..I get most of these symptoms too but strangely enough I also wondered if my 'clicky rib' (in exactly the same place) has anything to do with it because I'm generally only aware of it when I'm feeling gurgly. It would be good to know what that is, even if it isn't related...

I'm 22 and I've never been able to burp naturally or on purpose except on a few occasions 'accidentally'; like if i cough and hiccup at the same time or once when I bumped into a door frame just as I opened my mouth to speak and instead let out a really impressive burp! ..So obviously I must have the 'mechanisms' to make burping possible.

Also - I don't know if it's relevant- I'm half Indonesian and the only other people i've ecountered with the same problem (before this forum) are half Indonesian too. One of them could burp but occasionally got the gargling noises and the watery mouth feeling etc. and the other couldn't burp at all but has since naturally started burping (I'm jealous!)...I always thought it was either a very weird coincidence or a strange Indo/English mutation!

Even though it's not the bane of my life no doctors I've told seem remotely interested or concerned...sometimes I get really painful hiccups and I have to do the finger/throat thing, especially if I've had any alcohol, fizzy drinks, sweets or certain fruits like apples and grapes and it's definately a big nuisance but it's REALLY good to know that other people have the same problem and I actually might not have to put up with it for the rest of my life!!

Good luck to us eh!

I am so relieved I am not alone
I have been suffering with this gurgling too. I had it last year for a few months. My GI doc determined it was anxiety related. It went away when I added an addictive anti-anxiety medicine. However, I developed a lot of other side effects from the medicine and had to wean off it. Now of course I developed the gurgling back again. I am not new to digestive problems or anxiety. My history the last 3 years includes lots of gas all the time, gallbladder removal, hiatal hernia, slow gastric emptying while on anxiety meds, reflux, bloating, abdominal pain, depression and anxiety. I know this is anxiety related but I have tried all sorts of things to get rid of it in place of medicine such as yoga, meditation, relaxation exercises, eating slower to swallow less air, eating things that don't cause gas. I am at my wits end. My GI doc thinks I'm just swallowing too much air, but it has gone from burping all the time to just simply gurgling all the time. This can't just be air. My theory is that it is either spasms of the esophagus, slow gastric emptying, hiatal hernia, or something to do with not having a gall bladder.

same thing
hi. im 24 and also have been getting this all my life! ive never been able to burp. except for the occassional weak one here or there. but i dont think the noises and nausea are my body trying to do so, bc like others have pointed out it doesnt seem to be related to what i eat or drink. i have noticed a very direct relationship with my stress and anxiety levels though. sometimes the nausea gets really bad and i have to do the finger down the throat thing. my friends call it my "fake vomiting" bc i never actually throwup, just gag air like others have said. no other symptoms of acid reflux, no heartburn. ive also noticed that sometimes ill get it everyday around the same time for a week or so. and then not at all for a while. interested in hearing what anyone's doctors have said about it. mine have had no viable suggestions.

I'm not sure what to do next. Do I go back to my GI doctor, and what should I ask him to try. Has anyone found any new information on this gurgling?

hi my name is alex and i am 16.. its been about almost a year since it first started happening to me.. i am a male... after i eat my stomach does bloat up and makes me feel full even if i am not.. i dont no drink pop now because that really causes my stomach to bloat up... i can not burp to save my life but do happen to burp every once and a while.. it has been happening a little more often but just small burps that dont really do anything.. i can not get through 3 beers without feeling like im gunna puke from stomach gases... i am ussually forced to go to the bathroom and put 2 fingers down my throat to get that gases out which sounds like im puking but just gases are coming out very violently... WE MUST FIND A CURE OR SOLUTION FOR THIS...i really dont want to go through life like this expecially when i love beer .. i can fart like no tommorow.. and that seems to be what happens when i get stomach gases but takes a long time for me to fart and get rid of the pains...

i say we start posting this up on other forums... consulting doctors face to face or online and figure out what the problem is and how we can fix it...!!!!! i thaught it was just me but now that i see that it isnt just me i saw we get something done... even if it means just something that will make us able to burp... ALL I WANT IS TO SIMPLY BE ABLE TO BURP... stretch and im sure burping will get rid of our gas problems...

EVERYONE gets gases just they are able to burp ... i just wish i could...

I CAN burp but it doesn't help
You guys, I honestly don't even know if being able to burp would help you. I CAN burp - tiny ones all day long that accompany this gurgling in my throat, but it doesn't make the gurgling stop. Putting my fingers down my throat until a loud noise comes out and farting alot don't help me much either. Usually I just have to lie down for a long time. I agree that we need to work together to figure it out. There are three threads now that I've seen on this forum that show a lot of sufferers. I've posted on another forum and have gotten no responses. My doc thinks I'm crazy. I'm at my wits end. I am trying so hard to get my life together after suffering for 3 years with major anxiety and about a dozen health issues. If a doctor can't figure this seemingly simple thing out I am really scared to even trust docs at all anymore. What can we do next?

interesting thread
i too can't burp and have been having lots of GI problems lately.

I was born quite premature, and had severe GERD (reflux) during my infancy.

Is anyone else here aware of any links between childhood GERD and other GI problems later in life ?

Somebody find a solution!
It's comforting to know I'm not alone, but it's too bad this thread continues without testimony from someone who has conquered the problem. People laugh and think it's funny, but sometimes when you're out trying to have a good time, it's anything but funny.

Let me take this a step further and say that this inability to burp I think is affecting my sex life! If I am out and I've been drinking beer, I'm so bloated and it makes sex more uncomfortable and at times impossible to reach climax. Sorry if this is TMI for some on this thread, but it's a medical forum so I want to stress the priority I place on finding a solution to this. I am so tired of sticking my finger down my throat as a last resort...and I'm thinking that's not good for your heart either.

Let me assure any outsiders to this that it's not the sphincter between the esophagus and stomach; it that were the case we wouldn't feel the air travel up the windpipe, hit the top and then gurgle back down.

And don't tell me to stop drinking beer/soda. That's not a cure.

Same Story
It's very comforting to discover that there is a community of sufferers out there and its not just me. I am trying antacids and I have had my fingers down my throat so often, its beginning to be ineffective. Its possible that stress and anxiety are related to this but the gas issue is a problem and the pain is becoming unbearable and unpredictable.

This has been getting worse in my life for the past 10 years and I really need to find a solution. Let's brainstorm! Confused

Anyone find a cure???
I was doing some searching to see if anyone else in the world couldn't burp like me and I was really surprised to stumble across this website. I am currently going through the same problem. You go see all the doctors an none of them can find a damn thing wrong with you. I noticed nobody has posted for a while, so I just wanted to see if anyone with this "burping problem was still around.
