hey guys, i have this same problem, and as an athlete it makes it worse cuz then i can't get enough air, and it causes problems, as you guys mentioned that sticking your finger down your throat to relieve helps but can sometimes make you throw up, well i think that trying to make yourself throw up without using your finger can help lead to learning how to relieve that air and possibly burping, so just keep trying that and hopefully something can be figured out

Can't Burp
Wow!!! So many people like me. I thought I was alone. Not being able to burp has led to horrible gas my whole life. In the morning I'm thin and at night, I'm chubby! When I lay down for bed, I pass gas 30+ times. It does'nt smell, it's just air that I couldn't burp up throughout the day. I burp about once a month and its tiny and quick. Drinking beer makes it worse and hiccups are violent and rock my chest. Laying down helps the bloating as do veggies and fiber. I,ve had to live with it because no doctor has been able to help!!!

Just a few suggestions from someone who has dealt with this for years and years:

A low carb diet almost completely controls this for me, because most carbs produce gas during digestion. I can go weeks without an episode of gurgling or bloating. (And you lose weight!) If you can't go totally low carb, cutting out the most simple carbs like flour and sugar will help, although some of the worst offenders are fruits and vegetables. Google "gas producing foods" for a list of foods to avoid.

For me, the worst combinations are high fat (especially fried) foods combined with sweet carbs, especially dairy things like ice cream or cheesecake. Add soda to it and you can kill me now.

Besides cutting out the obvious, like soda and beer, watch for other gas producing things like chewing gum and using straws. My husband has made me aware that I swallow a lot of air when I drink from cups and water bottles, so I have tried to watch that too.

I HATE that I have to gag myself to burp, but what a total relief! I have never been able to do it with my fingers down my throat, though. I have to use something like the handle of my toothbrush to reach back to the back of my tongue or sides of my throat where they stimulate the gag reflex. I can't do it in a public place or someone else's house, though. It's way too loud. So embarrassing.

Alternately, lying down, especially on my right side helps a lot. If I lie on my back or my left side after I eat I gurgle horribly and also get terrible stomach cramps. Weird. Even leaning to the right while sitting helps the gurgles sometimes.

Does anyone else get hyper-salivation with these symptoms? It makes it so much worse to be swallowing a ton of saliva.

I work in a doctors office and have talked to a couple of them about this. I usually get blank stares. I think it's not very common and considered more of a nuisance than a real medical issue.

"I don't know if my pregnancy shifted something or made something loose but the gas problems are gone, no more frogs on my throat or bloating pain, just terrible heartburn."

This is similar to my problem. Same as everyone, can't burp, get bloated. What I have noticed is that the bloat comes and goes and seems to alternate with heartburn. Lately heartburn has taken over as the main problem and my bloat has subsided a fair bit. Give me the bloat any day, at least I can fart and find some relief.

Wow - finally some people with the same 'condition' as me! Never been able to burp, and get the aforementioned growling at the back of the throat and in the chest area. I have a hiatus hernia and have been battling against a stomach ulcer. Combine all 3 and I have been experiencing untold amounts of gas and bloating!

Apparently the hiatus hernia can be operated on, with unreliable results. Not sure if it's worth it, or if it would even cure my burp-free life.

Anybody else seen a link between hiatus hernia and lack of burping?

Fixing your hernia won't help this condition
Having a hiatus hernia repaired may make the condition worse. the problem is with the UES at the top of your throat. I had gastric sleeve bariatric surgery a month ago and my hernia fixed at the same time. I still can't burp. read my post at the bottom of page 22.

I do have one, but it's very small and the doctors said they would be surprised if it was causing any symptoms

Bloatedness, Painful Hiccups, Gurgling in Throat
Not being able to burp when I'm feeling bloated is bad, but what I hate most of all is being in public and trying to suppress that awful "croaking" (as my boyfriend calls it) in my neck. Sometimes it can be painful, but the pain isn't even as bad as the embarrassment I'll feel.

In addition my hiccups are loud and excruciating. Out of no where, I'll make this hideous gasping hiccup-noise that sounds like I've been punched in the chest. Certainly is what it feels like too.

Someone said it could be linked to anxiety. This is possible; I have social anxiety disorder, but this also happens after I eat or drink certain foods. Dairy and sometimes even plain water will do it.

I'm afraid to visit my doctor about this. My parents don't even take me seriously when I explain it to them. No, they just laugh.

(Spicy food is forbidden?! Sad But... I love spicy food!)

I'm 18 and have had this my whole life.

Symptoms:
-Gurgly noise at back of throat
-Ridiculous salivation after heavy meals that makes gurgling noise worse (managed to fill a whole glass in an hour)
-Hiccups that occasionally make me feel like my chest is going to explode like in the film Alien
-Bloated stomach
-Inability to vomit (only rarely can I do this)

I can't get past 2 pints of beer - 2 and a half is my record - after that I am in so much pain I just sit there miserably, not chatting to anyone and have to wait 3-4 hours before I can move or talk properly.

I am an anxious person but I doubt this has caused this condition for my whole life

The gurgling noise comes after every meal I have without fail, and also when I'm anxious like in exams (can you imagine how embarrassing that is)

I really don't want to physically gag myself - and as everyone else's doctors have been useless I may as well book an appointment just for the sake of it. At least we can suffer together!

SOLUTION!!!!
I have had the same symptoms that many have described on the eighteen pages here on ehealth. I've had this problem all my life and it has been miserable at times when I've consumed too much food and particularly too much alcohol. It has been one of the worst annoyances in my life, and now it's gone!

In one of my frequent trips to CVS to purchase GasX gas relief pills (which I'm not sure were ever even that effective) I decided to try the GasX prevention pills. These contain digestive enzymes that break down food for easier digestion, and so you are supposed to take the pills before you are about to eat or drink something that may make you uncomfortable.

So, the very first next time I sat down with my friends to drink a lot of beer, I took a single pill RIGHT BEFORE I started drinking my first beer. Sure enough, I burped a single, small burp immediately after I started feeling the pressure. That was it for the first night and the discomfort was still evident.

From then on, I insisted on taking a single (or sometimes two) GasX prevention pill before drinking. Everytime I took a pill I was gauranteed at least a single small burp. This was an unbelievable change considering I had been unable to burp my entire life outside of maybe three or four tiny burps throughout the year.

A month or two later I began to get somewhat discouraged again. I was able to burp with the assistance of these pills, but I was forced to take them and the burps came in only one or two at a time and the relief wasn't too significant. So, after two or three months of taking these pills about once a week (sometimes more), I started to forget to take the pills or just forget to go to the store to get more. To my surprise the burping continued without the help of the pills. At this point my belief was that whatever chemical inbalance had occured that prevented me to burp, taking these pills once or twice a week for a couple of months had provided the natural nutrients necessary to return me to a proper balance for burping.

No the fairy tale ending, ever since I stopped taking the pills, the burps have progressively gotten more and more frequent and even more intense. The burps are in reponse to EVERY discomfort including food, soda, and beer. Last night I officially diagnosed myself fully recovered as I was able to burp after almost every sip of beer and expel any pressure build up at will. I could have finished as many as I'd wanted, and at the end of the summer I would have been sick after two and a half due to the pressure.

I really hope everyone tries this product as it is all natural and pretty cheap and has been a life changer for me. This site has provided me with an awesome source of comfort during the times where I was clueless. If you are successful with this product, awesome! If you are successful and can post your successes on this site to encourage others, that would be amazing!

I wish everyone the best of luck with this hopeful solution!

this is amazing. i have the exact same problem. I have anxiety issues related to vomitting ( routed from a bad experience when I was a child)

i think i may be creating a physical issue with my mental aversion to vomitting?

i will try the gasxprevention meds.

quick question: does anyone actually vomit without putting the fingers down the throat because of this issue?

it is nice to know there are others with this problem.

It seems to get worse if i try to burp, because i never have any success and it seems to stir things up a lot. I, "pull" up the air in my throat, sometimes just by taking a deep breath, because it feels stuck somewhere around my chest.

i could never put my fingers down my throat, i have a very strong aversion to vomiting, so much so that i needed therapy in order to agree living in the dorms in college because i knew people would be drunk and vomiting.

i very much appreciate any response.

garciare, I think most people here vomit less frequently than average. I only vomit when I'm extremely ill, for example when I have food poisoning. Even huge amounts of alcohol are insufficient to make me vomit.

I too have had this problem forever. I never thought about gagging myself till I read the other comments. To my surprise it did not make me vomit, it was all air that came out. What relief, I'm 33 and have been dealing with this discomfort for so long. I have purchased the Gas-X pills like mentioned above, I'll report back on my results. To actually fix this would be amazing.
