Wow I'm just as suprised as everyone else it seems, that there are others out there. I'm 20 and I've never burped, I have the same symptoms as everyone else, I get bloated almost everyday, hear and feel the gasey noises rising in my esauphogus but nothing happens, it just builds up and no one can teach me to burp. If I drink beer at a pub I get to about 4 and I have to sit there in pain, feels like a balloon in my stomach gettin more and more pressure until it burns and I cassualy go to the men's room and do a sort of really loud and embarrassing dry heave a few times and salivate a Lot, it's a terrible problem, I hope doctors can find out what is wrong and help us some day, I don't know maybe its our body types or we might have something in common? I'm very tall, and have a slim build and am Scandinavian.

burping
I am sitting here laughing my a** off because I can't believe I could find so many people like me.

I cannot burp either..sometimes I burp, very rarely, but it's involuntary. I don't even realize it's happening. I have never been to the doctor. I just think that we are born this way..it really sucks because I always feel bloated..lately it's bothering me a lot...
I hear the noises in my throat and I even feel the air coming up but it does not come out..it goes back down. I also noticed that I get worst If I have an empty stomach...anyone else feels that?
good luck everyone

Weight gain from not burping....
I also have this problem, As I sit here after lunch gurgling and uncomfortably bloated I am wondering how much in weight people are flucuating. I can weigh myself and be ~135 lbs then by the end of the next day weigh like ~147, I voiced my concerns to one of my doctors and was told I am still technicaly under weight (female , 27y/o 5'9) so they were extremely unconcerned. I work out a lot and eat very healthy but due to my bloat always look fat and pregnant; I am so fed up with this I just want answers! I have done the probiotic and IBS meds and every single gas/bloating med from OTC to Prescription simithecone. There has to be a medical study or some dr that has done some sort of study as this seems more common then I would have first assumed.

hmm
sweet! more like me!
i think i've had this problem since the last time i vomited wich was when i was around 7...i'm now 20 and can't burp and as a result i'm usually the guy that chugs some shots of vodka instead of a few nice cold beers...well i was up untill today when i started reading this forum.i started to try out different things like holding my adam's apple and such but out of pure luck i happened to thrust my stomach outward just at the right time and then i heard that lovely sound that i thought i'd never hear.turns out it worked for me...but the timing has to be right.i think you guys should be able to find your way eventually , just keep a cool head and don't get frustrated,it has to be natural.
hope you guys get better too,i'm off in town to grab some beers for a more appropriate field test.althogh i still won't drink from a bottle or drink fizzy drinks again for as long as i live.

Not being able to burp
I've got the exact same problem, nice to see that I'm not the only one. Went to the docter with it, he looked at me as if I was joking, and told me not to worry about it too much, said there was nothing to do about it. I was kinda dissapointed when he said that. This problem is a pain in the *ss when we go out and drink, 4 beers and I'm on the edge of exploding. The only solution for me is to keep on drinking 'till I have to throw up, but when I do, only air comes out(very loud), it's not a nice feeling, but I feel releaved afterwards. My body seems to push all the air to the other side of my body, so I have to fart a goddamn lot. I'm not ready to give up just yet, maybe i'll see some alternative medicine crap doctor, or maybe I really have to learn to live with it. But when there are so many people sharing a problem shouldn't people be searching for a solution. I can't find anything medical on this issue. Maybe we non-burpers have to stand up and fight for our right to burp, They could at least do some research regarding our medical condition, right...

me neither
So I have the same issue. One thing that I've found is that when I smoke weed after I drink I usually have a few burps come up. Otherwise I never do. I have a really bad gag reflex so the finger down the throat thing isn't a great option for me. I'm not suggesting you smoke, but this might have some tie to the anxiety/being tense idea. There has to be an easier way...

I'm tired of having this problem
this topic was started january 16th 2006....

It is now November 8th 2009 and i am 21 years old. For the longest time I've been "sucking it up." I'm glad to know there are others like me out there, but at the same time it's been 4 years and there has been no cure of medical advancement I've heard of to solve this problem.

Multiple people have probably lived their whole life through with this problem without knowing that others have it as well. I'm tired of always feeling bloated and I too, have to always stick my fingers down my throat just to burp. It's embarrassing that I have bad gas and I feel sick after every meal. Someone please post a cure or direct a doctor to this forum please!

Hi guys, I think I may have made some progress on this.

I have found out that I have very high prolactin levels. This is the hormone that women have high levels of when they are pregnant. Pregnant women often complain that they cannot burp. I've also seen papers published which link prolactin levels with the LES - so perhaps it affects the UES also.

To reduce prolactin levels, one can use various dopamine related supplements, so I'm going to try one of these.

Hope this helps someone

wow, we arnt alone.
Wow, I cant believe other people cant burp!I am literally laughing out loud.. I MAYBE burp 3 times a year, and like most of you, it is completely random and unexpected. I drink pop all day, every day, and this is not a problem. It doesnt make me feel bloated or needing to burp.
The main time I have problems, is if I try to drink beer, or large amounts of alcoholic drinks - I have solved this problem by being a "shot only" kind of drinker. Once I have drank 1-2 beers, I have the worst pain in my stomach and it is visibly large from the air inside. The only way to get this out, is to try to throw up.When I force myself to throw up - i dont throw up - the air just escapes.
The funny thing, literally, is that any time I throw up (i mostly experienced this my first years of college from drinking), the buildup of air inside me comes out in the lOUDEST and LONGEST "burp"(i guess you can call it). It is really undescribable...It seriously is sooo embarassing. But, i mean, there is no hiding anytime I throw up. My boyfriend and I laugh about it, I mean, there is nothing I can do about it. haha...
Also, in order to get air out, when brushing my teeth at night, i gag myself a little in order to dry heave a little. This lets the air out in a sometimes quieter way..
Nobody understands though. If I do bring up that I am unable to burp - the topic inevitably leads to the assumption I must fart a lot to get the gas out...although this is not true, it is easiest to avoid the topic alltogether.

haha, sooo...i am glad i am not alone. has anyone found a name for this problem? what is there to do!

I am 25 years old and have had all the same problems with not being able to burp my whole life and having stomach problems because of it. I have actually learned to burp. It's strange and amazing. I suspect there to be something physically similar that all of us have in common that kept it from being a natural reaction, but at least with me... over the last 4 months or so, I've gotten to the point where I can actually burp when I need to most of the time. I still can't belch on command or burp the ABCs, but when I feel the need to burp, I can do certain things with my chest, shoulders, neck, jaw, and throat to make a burp happen (sounds more complicated than it actually is once I got the hang of it). Sometimes they're small and sometimes they are big. It did not completely fix my stomache problems, but it is better and i can now better understand which foods upset my stomach, and I can explain it in no other way than to say that it is absolutely glorious. I'm interested to see if I can help anyone else learn how to do this.

Alright, well I know that it may not be the same thing for everyone, but this is what I've found.

The biggest thing for me to learn was torso, shoulder, neck, head, and jaw placement to allow a burp through. I have to be at least sitting up straight or leaning forward slightly is even better. Can't do it while sitting back. I have to push my shoulders straight back, the further the better. And then I have to push my head forward and then chin down. At first it helped me to turn my head left to right while my chin was down and head out. It also helps open my throat if I open my mouth slightly and push my jaw forward, like giving myself an under bite. Regarding throat muscles and relaxation, I've found that the only thing that I was familiar with that is similar to "opening my throat" would be a yawn. So if I position myself in the way specified above, and then make myself yawn, the first part of the yawn (before it takes over and you feel like you have to yawn) is when I will burp.

It took me probably 3 months to realize that full list of motions after I started getting a little bit of control. As odd as it all sounds if I have even one of those incorrect, I usually can't burp, or the burp is miserably small and useless.

This only works for me when I need to burp. I can't burp on command, but if I've just drank half of a Mountain Dew and feel like I need to burp, I simply make sure to be sitting/standing up or leaning forward slightly, push my shoulders back, touch my chin to my chest, and then right when I feel like it should be hitting my throat, I push my head forward (while still keeping my chin down), open my mouth slightly and push my jaw out and start the yawn feeling in my throat. Once I got the hang of it, I learned that by having breathed some air into my diaphragm, I could push out a larger burp by using that air in my diaphragm to push on the burp. I didn't learn that until I got the hang of smaller burps.

I don't know if this is common with others or not, but I've got a bit of an overbite and some sinus problems. For as long as I can remember I've gotten phlegm stuck in my throat and have to spit it out... and the more stuff in my throat, the less likely I am to be able to burp as well.

Hope this is something that can be helpful. I'd like to know if it is. Keep me posted.

Bob

solution to inability to burp
The problem has a diagnosis. Its called the ring of schatzki Google it.

I have a blood relative that had a simple procedure done in Canada to fix his problem. Turns out he was having lots of difficulty burping and had the same symptoms. The ring at his esophagus was 9mm wide. The doctor did a test with liquid and found this out. They inserted a balloon type device to the opening and enlarged the rings to 17mm or more. He can burp now.

Finally, not on this planet alone!
I began my problems 10 years ago with bad acid reflux. I would get bad sweats after a meal and begin the bloated/lack of pressure relief problem in my stomach and esophagus area. I developed an alergy to clams (used to love clam chouder) and found out the hard way with an emergency visit to the hospital. Over the years I have learned to avoid soda, beer, caffeine and pizza hut (don't miss the pizza). I have had 2 upper GI's, 2 lower GI's, alergy tests, and will have a breath test on November 25th. I am beginning to lose hope. Depression really becomes a factor when the pressure is so constant for a number of days. The best part of the day is morning, but right after lunch reality starts building in the esophagus. I will mention this blog and maybe the doctor will have an idea of what we are all talking about. I have read about a wrapping of the upper stomach but I'm not sure if this will help, need to investigate more. Please to those of you that read these posts and eventually find a cure, please come back and tell us. It only takes one.

Me too
I thought I was the only one, My friends and family had never heard of someone not burping.
Only thing I have found to work for my poor bloated stomach is drinking boiled water, seems to push the gas down the other way.
All I want to do is to burp, Im so sick of looking pregnant and gurgling
Ill keep checking back to this forum to see if anyone comes up with something and Ill bring Dysfunction of the Belch Reflex up with my doctor.
Take care all you kermits
