Q: Lower Back Pain, Kidney Infection, and Required Examinations
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 16th, 2006
I have been having lower back pain, first on the right side, that went away, now its on the left. No trouble urinating, no fever or chills, no vomiting, just finishing menstral cycle, sharp achy, constant pain in lower back. The last time I felt this pain, it was a kidney infection, but I couldnt urinate, and it burned, that was 5 years ago. My question is, could this just be a kidney infection without all of the symptoms, or Should I have ovarin ultrasound?

Kidney infection usually presents symptoms include a high temperature, fever, and disuria (painful urinating). However, a urine examination will confirm or reject thes possibility of infection or inflammation in the kidneys. Ultrasounds are useful for identifying both renal causes (cysts, stones, tumors) and ovarian discorders (cysts, tumors).

You might also consider requesting an X-ray of the lumbar vertebra to detect spondylotic changes of the vertebra. A CT-scan is the best method for imaging the abdominal organs and intervertebral discs. You can present your symptoms and discuss these options to your family doctor first, and then follow up with a specialist, if necessary.
