Pulled muscle???
I have the same problem. I had bronchitis for almost a month and woke to pain in my right side and lower back I couldn't even lay on my right side but, tonight I was sitting on my couch leaning on my right side against the couch and felt a pop and omg the pain is crazy. It feels like electricity going up my back and into my hip and follows down my leg. Can't lay down. I used heat and it did nothing now I am trying ice and it has eased up some but, I am afraid to cough. Anymore suggestions?

I have been sick with CMV for 6 weeks now, dry cough was associated and was never anything that annoyed me. I'm suddenly starting to feel better when Tuesday around noon and I can't take my nap (sleeping lots) because of this pain. By bedtime I barely slept at all. Went to the doctor the next day, she diagnoised me with a UTI(?) but me on antibiotics and vicodin for the pain. THAT night we wound up in the ER because of the pain, I couldn't stop crying and screaming. They admitted me to the hospital assuming I had a kidney infection, which I don't. I was let out of the hospital last night and I'm still unable to sleep well. I got 3 hours and I JUST NEED MORE! Anyone know what to do. Everyone says I've pulled a muscle away from the rib on my right side. HELP?!

I have been suffering as well for over 6 months now and was hospitalized in April. I go through a cyle of exasperbated asthma then get on prednisone, can finally breathe so well that I cough hard and blow out a rib muscle and am in extreme pain, wean off the steroids then pain finally eases up only for the asthma to kick up again and back at square one --- can't breathe and damaged my ribs/muscles again. Had several chest & rib x-rays and just recently they finally found that I had fractured ribS! I am so over it!!

Just to let you know that detecting a fractured rib is very difficult. The pain is definitely not in your head!

A friend of mine said he coughed and felt a pop in his abdomen for two weeks after that he was having severe pain, finally went to the E.R. had x-ray and was told he had bronchitis (although he wasnt coughing) and a strained muscle. He was sent home with antibiotics ,robitussin, and vicodin. That night he threw up all night and all the next day with terrible stomach pains. At 4 in the morning he awoke me and asked to go the ER and said the pain was unbearable. After a blood and urine sample were taken and a CT scan
, it was determined his appendix had ruptured and he had emergency surgery at 8am. This is day 2 in the hospital and his blood pressure is up and down and he's running a fever and still has a tube feeding out the infection. So please pay close attention to your pain. Most of the pain with appendicitis is on your right side.

I'm so glad I found this forum as I thought I had seriously damaged something through a recent cough I had. Thanks to every one on here Smile
Massive pain just under my right armpit around rib cage when I cough. Impossible to get into a comfortable position in bed!
Deep Heat and pain killers is all that helps. Then just time to heal which is a sod as I am in training!

I have a pulled muscle on my left side, right underneath my rib cage from coughing too hard. I found that sleeping in a recliner helps a lot with the pain, especially the pain of coughing, so I wanted to suggest this to others that are dealing with the same thing. I hope it helps some of you.

Hi there, Having the same pain issues as everyone else. Pain on left side under rib cage only thing different is when I eat it is very uncomfortable and painful,so looks like I will be eating less or more times with smaller portions. Popped a "norco" half an hour ago and it helps. when I start coughing it seems to spasm and hurts like hell. No doc yet have to see how it goes. No lifting at work and that should be fun cause I'm an automotive technician. Good luck to all of us.

Please accept me as a member of your stabbing rib pain club. It started with bronchitis and the cough eventually produced the most excruciating pain below my right armpit, about 5 inches down, towards the back. My sister had this after bronchitis also, and told me her Dr. diagnosed her with Chondritis. The pain does take several months to subside, which I have accepted as my terrible fate. My only relief is a 500 mg Vicodin and a heating pad. Even that doesn't take away all of the pain. Thankfully, it only hurts now (after a week) when I inhale or sit or stand too long, and not when I cough. I had to go back to work today and took a sock with rice in it and heated it in the microwave every now and then, to apply it to my side. This condition is not a very talked about one, but it sure is a painful one!!! I'm glad to read this forum and see I haven't been alone. Smile

Might be a Virus not torn muscles.
I like most of you here had the flu, coughed a lot, sharp pain under my ribs. Dr sent me for Xrays, no breaks so was put down to a torn muscle. That took about 6 weeks to get right. I had about 3 weeks of no pain, then it happened again, but this time I hadn't done anything to have pulled a muscle. This time the pain was worse, so I went to the hospital. They said I have a virus, I thought that this was their way of saying that they really didn't know what was wrong, except today my daughter has exactly the same pain.

I am in the same situation with a cold as well. I have a slight fever which seems to come and go. Not sure if the fever is from the cold or strained muscles.

I can not tell all of you how happy I am to hear that I am not going insane! I have been sick since Christmas with pneuomonia, bronchitis, and PITS Post Infectious Tussive Syndrome. About 3 weeks ago I realized that my right side under my arm pit and on my rib cage was killing me! I was and am in so much pain, I cant sleep comfortably, I breathe hard, cough, sneeze pretty much move move and I am in agony! I was taking hydrocodeine at night for the cough, but I just found out that I am pregnant so no more of that! I am so uncomfortable at night I actual have an extra pillow for under my right side at night and i am in tears changing positions in the bed. I really hope this heals sooner rather than later

I don't think anyone can know the pain associated with this until you go through it. Mine started last week during training. I am a cop and was slammed on the mat by my training partner. It knocked the wind out of me. I was doing ok until a few days later when I coughed. It immediately felt like I was being stabbed in the ribs. The pain took my breath away. If I could have spoken I would have told my wife to call 911. I ended up driving myself to the doctors. No breaks or fracures. Doctor said it was probably an intercostal strain. I was given Percocet and told to take 800 milligrams of Ibuprofen 3 times a day. I am terrified of sneezing or coughing. Every time I do the pain is horrific. I had to take work off for rest. Hopefully it will stop soon.

Same pains
Again, glad to hear I'm not the only one. I had a terrible cough/cold for three weeks. I was never diagnosed but I suspect pneumonia (coughing up green phlegm, sore throat)...I have a terrible doctor that just gave me cough medicine until I begged for antibiotics when I got an ear infection days later. The cough lasted a long time, then towards the end of it I had terrible soreness and pains all around my upper midsection. I could feel it in my back sometimes, sides, all around my ribs. It would kill to cough, take a deep breathe, sneeze, laugh. So I went to the ER after two weeks of this pain. I had a chest xray, gallbladder ultrasound, blood work done. Nothing. Pulled muscles they said. It just the worst spot because of constant contraction from breathing/talking. I have pain killers that help, but I'm sure they will run out before this is healed. Awesome! Good luck to anyone else suffering with this. It's a pain in the ass. Or ribs.

pulled rib muscel
I too have been sick with a nasty cough and about 3 weeks ago I woke up with the worst pain ever. Mine started on my left side under my rib cage in my back. It hurt to breath, cough, move an inch basicly. Last week I was taking a shower and sneezed really hard, I felt a pop and now it hurts in the front on the left side just under my boob. It still hurts with every movement and breath I take. and nothing I have taken in the last 3 weeks has helped at all, it hurts soooo bad. and I don't have medical at the moment to see a doctor so I have to just deal with it. : (
