Q: Fertility Question
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 14th, 2006
Is it possible for a woman with a very long cycle such as 35- 40 days not be able to find out if she is pregnant for about 3 weeks after a missed period? I am officially 15 days late which is very unusual for me and I have had a neg. preg. test. Please help me. What could be wrong?

If your pregnancy test is negative, there is a 99% chance that you are not pregnant.

It is possible that you exhibit signs of opsomenorrhoea (infrequent menstruation with menstrual cycles longer than 35 days) and/or irregular cycles (unequal menstrual cycles). These kinds of menstrual and cycle disorders are often the result of a disturbance in the axis hypothalamus, pituitary gland, or the ovaries. You'll need to go to your gynecologist for a hormonal analyses (FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone, prolaktin, testosterone, DHEA, and thyroxin) and an ultrasound examination of the ovaries in order to diagnose the symptoms and to identify the cause of long menstrual cycles.
