What causes a human tongue to have a white film on it all the time? Should this be checked by a Dr. Or a dentist? :(

Do you have bad breath? Generally when it gets white coated that's what it means. Try using a tongue cleaner and talk to your dentist.

No I don't have bad breath. That is the strange part. I will call my dentist to find out what exactly it is and how to get rid of it. Thanks

I am no Dr. But it might be thrush, you might want to check that out.
Good luck!

The white film on one's tongue is usually the result of bacteria and their waste products. You can help to reduce this over time by scraping your tongue daily. Brushing your tongue alone will not kill the bacteria, only help to loosen and reduce it a bit. This is because a wet toothbrush can actually hold/harbor the bacteria. You can buy a cheap tongue scraper anywhere oral health products are sold. To properly scrape your tongue drag the scraper from the back of your tongue to the tip several times, rinsing it off between each pass.

I have also read where it is suggested to use hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash to help kill the bacteria. It said to start of using the peroxide daily, and then as the bacteria build up decreases maybe only a couple times a week. While it taste nasty, it does work. Just be sure not to swallow the peroxide!

Teach...What you are saying has the most logic to it. The white film is bacteria and needs to be removed daily. Being preggy, you also need to floss and use a bacteria killing rinse daily. I know flossing is aggravating but is prevents gingivitis, which is the painful swelling and bleeding of the gums. Now that we are preggy, we have twice as much blood in our gums due to the volume increase. Your gums should be a healthy, pretty pink. Not red or even purple. Floss floss floss!!!! I can't say it enough. Also, you need to brush 2 times a day. I know it sounds horrible ladies..Lol...But we must stick to a health regimine!!

Not sure what 'white tongue' has to do with pregnancy, but oh well.

As far as I know, a white coating of the tongue is a sign that the body is out of balance. It's nothing to lose sleep over, won't kill you, etc. I've had a white tongue for years and i'm still here.

If it worries you to no end, you can always ask your doctor.
