Q: Stomach, Ulcers, Gastric Bypass, Colon Disorders Question
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 13th, 2006
I constantly experience loud stomach "growling" that is often times quite embarassing when in public places (school, church, etc.). Especially when it is very quiet, for example, when taking exams in class or meetings at work. I have tried many different over the counter remedies, some help, none solve the problem or work on a consistant basis. I have tried IBS medications, Pepto Bismol, etc.... and am currently on a 21 day Digestive System Cleansing program I purchased at a local GNC Nutrion Center. I have also tried drinking hot Peppermint tea constantly but its difficult to do and the benefits are minimal. This problem is literally ruining my life. I am embarassed to do things normal people do without thinking about it, like taking in a movie at the theater or watching a movie at home with friends. I hope that you can help me or give me any kind of suggestion that can help the problem I have so that I can get my life back on track. I truly appreciate any help or assistance you provide me with. Thank you very much for your time.

Stomach, Ulcers, Gastric Bypass, Colon Disorders Answer A146
A “loud stomach growling” is not conclusive enough evidence to diagnose IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Major symptoms for IBS are cramping, abdominal pain, and diarrhea/constipation. Additional symptoms are bloating, gas, belching, heartburn, reflux, difficulty swallowing, an early feeling of fullness with eating, and nausea. You have reported none of these symptoms. I suggest you try eating BEFORE going out because empty stomach/intestines may possibly cause the noise you report. If it doesn’t help, there are several medical examinations you may need to perform to identify the cause of your discomfort: a physical examination, an ultrasound, standard blood analyses, feces examination for bacteria and parasites (coprocultura), an intestinal passage examination (contrast X-ray with Barium-pulp), irigographia (contrast X-ray examination of the colon), gastroscopy, and colonoscopy.
